## Story Components * **Setting:** The time and place when and where the story happens. * **Plot:** The structure of the story, or the causal arrangement of events and actions. * **Plot Components:** * **Exposition/Introduction:** The start of the story. * **Rising Action:** The series of conflict and crises that lead to the climax. * **Conflict:** The problems faced by the characters. * **Climax:** The turning point of the story. * **Falling Action:** All of the action following the climax, where the problem is starting to be resolved. * **Resolution/Denouement:** The conclusion and tying together of all the threads. ## Types of Conflict * Man versus Himself * Man versus Man * Man versus Society * Man versus Nature * Man versus God ## Point-of-View * **First Person:** The narrator participates in the action and tells the story using the pronoun "I". * **Second Person:** The narrator switches between characters, using the pronoun "You". * **Third Person Limited:** The narrator does not partake in the story but only relates the actions/behaviors of the characters. * **Third Person Omniscient:** The narrator knows everything and tells the story using the third person pronoun. ## Theme * The underlying message of the story that points out significant truths about life and human nature, illustrated in the actions of the characters. ## Elements of Poetry * **Structure and Poetry:** The overall organization of lines and the conventional patterns of sound. * **Sound Patterns:** Rhyme scheme, meter, and sound play. These elements collectively take advantage of the perfomative, spoken nature of poetry.
