It is an electric lamp in which a filament, opposed to a bulb, is heated to incandescence by an electric current, through the lamp base, until it emits light. The incandescence rapidly destroys the oxygen in the air from reaching the hot filament, which would otherwise be rapidly destroyed by oxidation. It was the first type of modern electric light, introduced in the early 19th century and still in basically inefficient at converting electricity to light. ### Parts of an Incandescent Lamp a.
