# Important Roles of a Caregiver **A.** Advocate **B.** Personal Care **C.** Emotional Support **D.** Household Tasks **E.** Financial Support **F.** Medical Care Sometimes, patients are not comfortable talking about their personal needs and tend to downplay their feelings. Caregivers must be the voice of the patient and advocate for their needs. ## **A. Advocacy** Caregivers play a key role in advocating for the patient. This may include speaking up when the patient is not being treated with respect, or when their wishes are not being followed. Caregivers can also help patients to understand their rights and options, and to make informed decisions about their care. ## **B. Personal Care** Personal care tasks are those activities that help with the patient's basic needs, such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and eating. Caregivers may also help with more complex tasks, such as administering medications, providing wound care, and managing incontinence. ## **C. Emotional Support** Providing emotional support is an important part of caregiving. Caregivers may be the only people who can or are willing to listen to the patient, and to offer them comfort and reassurance. ## **D. Household Tasks** Household tasks are often necessary to create a safe and comfortable environment for the patient. Caregivers may be responsible for cleaning, cooking, laundry, and shopping. ## **E. Financial Support** Financial support may be necessary to help the patient pay for medical expenses, as well as for basic living expenses such as food and housing. ## **F. Medical Care** In some cases, caregivers may be responsible for providing medical care to the patient. This may include administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and providing wound care.
