PHYSICAL EDUCATION and HEALTH III Liceo – De La Salle Senior High School First Semester SY 2021-2022 Prepared by: Mr. Jade C. Alarcon, LPT Subject Teacher I. DEFINITION AND HISTORY OF DANCE: Dance is harmoniously composed of beautiful body poses and contrasted graceful posture of the body and its parts. It is the act of composing steps with grace, precision and facility to the time and beat of music using the body as its medium or tool. It refers to human movement either used as a form of expression or presented in a social, spiritual or performance setting. Cone (2012) explains that dance is a unique form of moving that holds various meanings for each individual, depending on how and why dance is a part of one’s life. It is purposeful, intentionally rhythmic and culturally patterned. It goes beyond ordinary motor activity because it also reflects one’s aesthetic values. It fully integrates all aspects of being human. Kinaesthetically, intellectually, socially and emotionally individuals learn about themselves and others through the medium of dance. Dance was one of the primary methods of passing these stories down from one generation to another. Early use of dance may have been a precursor to ecstatic trance states in healing rituals. Many of the contemporary dance forms can be traced back to historical, traditional, ceremonial and ethnic dances. It describes methods of non- verbal communication between human or animals, motion in inanimate objects (the leaves danced in the winds) and certain musical forms or genres. Kassing (2007) describes dance as a performance art which offers a multimedia experience in which movement interacts with sound, costumes and lighting in the presence of an audience. II. ROLE AND FUNCTION OF DANCE According to Guha (2012), dance is an expression of self and emotion. It involves physicality of movement both bodily and facial. Smith (2010) emphasizes that dance is a fundamental element of human behaviour and has evolved over the years from primitive movement of the earliest civilization to traditional ethnic or folk style, to the classical ballet and modern genres popular today. No dance form is permanent, definitive or ultimate. Changes occur but the basic element of dance endures. Dance is for all people. One need only recall that dance needs neither common race nor common language for communication; it has been, and remains a universal means of communication. The joy derived from participating in dance of any genre and then physical activity required provides the opportunity for the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle in today’s world. More so, dance complements the acquisition of motor skills in performing a function by teaching or expression and communication. Participation in dance promotes motor skill development and self- discovery, builds self-esteem, engages individuals in a positive opportunity to interact socially and increase cultural understanding.
