BASEA, LPT UNIT I: PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONCEPT INTRODUCTION To promote a healthy lifestyle among individuals, the DepEd and CHED emphasize Physical Education from preschool, Elementary, Secondary, and Tertiary levels. The course encourages students to use play or movement exploration settings, such as organized sports, gymnastics, dance, aquatics, and calisthenics, as a learning medium for major muscular exercises. DepEd and CHED want to create a well-rounded education experience that supports the students' physical, mental, and social development. Physical education becomes part of the curriculum in schools and educational institutions that focuses on developing students' physical fitness, motor skills, knowledge of healthy habits, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Meaning of Physical Education Physical Education came from the Latin words “physica, ” which means physics and “educatio, ” means the training of the bodily organs and powers with a view to the promotion of hearts and vigor. Objectives of Physical Education Physical Education as part of the educational system strives to help or facilitate the development of the potentialities of the individual. It includes the acquisition and refinement of motor skills as well as developing and maintaining fitness for optimal health and well-being. A. Physical Development - This is attained through regular exercises and participation in varied vigorous activities. - it refers to the progression of a person in bodily functions, skills, and capabilities that require and encourage active play, healthy eating and opportunity in engage in physical activities. B. Mental Development - Through physical activities, learners acquire knowledge and understanding of the rules and strategies. - the main goal of mental development is the progression of cognitive abilities, emotional regulation, social skills, and overall mental capabilities. - it is really important because through mental development it improves individuals think, feel and behave in everyday situation C. Emotional Development -Physical Education activities provide opportunities for self- expression and emotional mastery. Positive character traits like courage and discipline are most likely to become part of an individual’s life. - it helps individuals learn to understand, express and manage their emotions as well as it develops the ability to form meaningful relationship with others. - as someone with strong emotional skills they are better equipped to handle stress, build health relationship and make thoughtful decisions. D. Social Development -Physical activity often promotes the opportunity to be with other people. Through social experience, many appreciate the importance of physical education activities. - it is important for us to functions effectively in society providing opportunities for social interactions modeling positive social behavior and encourage empathy and cooperation and work as team. E. Spiritual and Moral Development - Physical Education activities provide the development of the inner self and soul. Experiencing these activities helps students discover a personal meaning and purpose in life. - it helps us to influence others, understand ourselves, relate to others, and make decisions that affect their life and the lives and live another person around you and also develops a strong empathy compassion and responsibility towards others. PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM -It is imperative that physical education teachers run programs or activities in the classroom that are sound, beneficial, healthful, and engaging for students to participate in and get the most out of. The Physical Education Program consist basically of three major areas, namely: 1. Service Physical Education- The purpose of the program is to provide instruction and develop skills, knowledge, and favorable attitudes toward physical fitness. - Service Physical Education as a curricular offering contains four learning areas: Physical Fitness, Rhythmic Activities, Individual and Dual Sports, and Team Sports. Its basic objective is the development of the individual which includes strength, vigor, vitality, neuro-muscular coordination, and good citizenship. 2. Intramural Sports- The competitive phase of sports activities. - It is an example of a recreational sports league activity organized WITHIN a particular institution typically a school, college, or university where participants compete against another member of the same community Example: Basketball, Volleyball, Ms. and Mr. NCST. 3. Extramural Sports- This competition involves competition among athletes who compete with other athletes with comparable ability. - it refers to organized sports competitions and activities where teams of individuals from one institution such as a school, college, or university will compete against teams from other institutions providing a higher level of completion and exposure. Example: Track and Field (100-millimeter dash), EVRAA, SCUAA. Mandates to Physical Education Program 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines Article XIV- Education, Sciences and Technology, Arts, Culture and Sports. Sec.1. The state shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education accessible to all. Sec.19. (1) The state shall promote physical education and encourage sports programs, leagues, Competitions, and amateur sports, including training for international competitions, to foster self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenship.
