MUSCULAR SYSTEM Part I - overview Key functions of muscular Movement system Support your weight Fend off gravity Turns chemical energy → mechanical energy by contracting and relaxing TYPES OF The muscular system is a complex network of tissues responsible for MUSCLES movement, stability, and various bodily functions. It consists of three main types of muscle tissue. Smooth Cardiac Skeletal Muscles: Muscles: Heart Muscles: Involuntary movement Voluntary 1) SMOOTH MUSCLES Structure: Short, tapered cells with one nucleus Control: involuntary; regulated by hormones, autonomic nervous system, other local factors Location: lines stomach, airways, blood vessels Function: pushes fluids/substances around –Regulates diameter of blood vessels –Controls contraction of digestive tract –Helps with digestion, blood flow regulation, and other involuntary processes 2) CARDIAC MUSCLE Structure: striped/striated; branched; one nucleus – (cells divide and converge again) Control: involuntary; regulated by hormones, autonomic nervous system, other local factors Location: the heart Function: pumps blood by contracting heart muscles SKELETAL MUSCLES Structure: elongated, cylindrical, striated (stripes), multiple nuclei –Connect to bones via tendons –Striations caused by actin and myosin filaments –Wrapped in dense connective tissue Control: voluntary; regulated by nervous system, other local factors Location: anywhere you can move by will (arms/face/legs/tongue) Function: movement; created heat from moving helps regulate body temp (running. lifting, smiling,
