Oilseed crops are grown primarily for the oil contained in the seeds which ranges from twenty percent for soybeans to more than forty percent for sunflowers and canola. There exists a wide variety of crops grown for the production of oilseeds to produce vegetable oils, industrial products and livestock feeds (Table 9.5). In 2020, global production of oilseeds was almost 600 million tonnes yielding approximately 200 million tonnes of vegetable oil and 350 million tonnes of meal. Canada is the sixth largest producer of oilseeds in the world following the United States, Brazil, China, Argentina and India. Table 9.5 Global production of oilseeds and oils for 2020. The major world sources of edible seed oils are soybeans, oil palm, canola, sunflowers, peanuts and cotton. Flax and castor bean oils are used mainly for industrial purposes such as the manufacture of paints, varnishes, putty, printing inks, greases, plastics, etc. Oilseed meals are by-products of industrial oilseed processing. Oilseed meals are used in the production of livestock feeds, providing high quality protein to create nutritionally balanced feeds. Oilseeds are increasingly used in the production of first generation biofuels, mainly ethanol and biodiesel, sparking debate about redirection of sources of dietary energy for humans into the energy sector.
