SELF-AWARENESS AND VALUES DEVELOPMENT Self-awareness means knowing your values, personality, needs, habits, emotions, strengths, weaknesses, etc. With a sense of who you are and a vision of the person you want to become, a plan for professional or personal development can be created. Self-awareness and values development in socialization are very important. This will help one to develop a unique personality in society that is shaped by their personality traits. It is also often a pre-requisite for effective communication and interpersonal relations, as well as for developing empathy for others. Values are especially important to understanding human behavior. Conflicts between them are often based on differences in values. Unlike attitudes, values come in, as in an unconscious list of priorities. When you seem to be at odds with another person, take a look at how your basic values differ. And when you seem in conflict with the members of the group, examine the group’s value system against your own. Hence, all of our values taken together are called a VALUE SYSTEM. On the other side, VALUE HAS BEEN DEFINED AS ANY OBJECT, ACTIVITY, and OR FRAME OF MIND THAT A PERSON CONSIDERS TO BE VERY IMPORTANT TO HIS OR HER LIFE. Values are said to be worth the importance we attach to different factors in our lives. The word value comes from the latin word “valere” which means to measure the worth of something. These are ideas and norms man considers relevant and good. Max Scheler (1874-1928) is the foremost exponent of axiology. Axiology is defined as the philosophical science and values. Lastly, these are principles that guide our actions, thoughts and activities. Types of Values There are two types of values according to Andres (1988) and these are; 1. Positive Values. These are our actions which give pleasant feelings to ourselves and others. Example: honesty, peace, loving, friendly, etc. 2. Negative Values. These are actions that we normally repent, values that are not acceptable to any form of organization. Example: dishonest, troublesome, deceit, fond of rumor, mongering, moody, etc. Where do Values Come From? Our personal values are formed in early childhood and are affected strongly by both the values of our parents, the environment, the school, the church and the government. The place and time of the first few years of our lives have a great effect on the formation of our lives. Mans personhood should not be contrasted to man’s humanity and individuality. The personhood (pagkatao) and man’s individuality (pagiging siya sa kanyang pagkatao) manifests man’s individual unique personhood, inasmuch as the individual is the person, and the person is the individual. VALUES DEVELOPMENT The word “values” comes from the latin word “valere” meaning “to measure the worth of something”. Also, values are the elements of life prevailing in any society and they lie at the core of man’s life. Where do our Values come from? Roots of the Filipino Character The following factors are considered roots of the Filipino character: The Family and Home Environment The Social Environment Culture and Language. History The Educational System Religion The Economic Environment. Mass Media. Leadership and Role Models. 1. Family and home environment. Our values and attitudes were greatly affected by what our family teaches us. For Example, the Child rearing practices. Child rearing can be both difficult and rewarding at the same time. The goal of every parents is to have your child grow up to be responsible and resourceful adult in society. In a large family where we are encouraged to get along with our siblings and other relatives, we learn pakikipag kapwa-tao In an authoritarian setting we learn respect for age and authority; at the same time we become passive and dependent on authority Children are taught to value family and to give it primary importance 2. Social environment. Social environment of the Filipino is characterized by feudal structure with great gaps between the reach minority and the poor majority. 3.Language and culture. Language and culture cannot be separated. Language is vital to understanding our unique cultural perspective. language is a tool is used to explore and experience our cultures and perspectives that are embedded in our cultures. 4. History. We are the product of our colonial history, which is regarded by many as the culprit behind our lack of nationalism and our colonial mentality. Colonialism developed a mind set in the Filipino which encouraged us to think the colonial as superior and more powerful. 5.The educational system. Aside from the problems inherent in the use of foreign language in our educational system, the educational system leads to other problems for us as a people. 6. Religion. Religion is the root of the Filipino optimism and its capacity to accept life's hardship. However religion also instils in the Filipino attitude of resignation and pre occupation with the afterlife. we become vulnerable also to being victimized by optimism, oppression, exploitation, and superstition. 7.The Economic Environment. Many Filipino traits are rooted in the poverty and hard life that is the loss of many Filipinos. Our difficulty drive us to take risks , compel us to work very hard , and develop in us the ability to survive. Poverty, however, has also become an excuse for graft and corruption, particularly among the lower rungs of the bureaucracy. 8. The political environment. The political environment is characterized by a centralization of power. Political power and authority is concentrated in the hands of the elite and the participation of most Filipino often is limited to voting in elections. 9. Mass media. It means technology that is intended to reach a mass audience. It is the primary means of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public. The flattest form for media are newspaper, magazine, radio, television and the latest is the internet. 10. Leadership and role models. Filipinos look up to their leader as their role model, political leader are the main model, but all other leader serves as a role models as well. Thus, when our leaders violate the law or show themselves to be self-serving and driven by the personal interest, when there lack of public accountability there is a negative impact on the Filipinos. ON VALUES OF GIVING 1. LOYALTY AND DEPENDABILITY -refers to loyalty to family, to employees, church, country, schools and to other institution/organization. 2. RESPECT -it refers to the courtesy, politeness, and manners. 3. LOVE -it means individual and personal caring that goes beneath and beyond loyalty and respect. 4. UNSELFISHNESS AND SENSITIVITY -this means being more extra-centered and less-self-centered. 5. KINDNESS AND FRIENDSHIP - refers to awareness that being kind and considerate is more admirable than being tough and strong. ON VALUES OF BEING 1. HONESTY -this must be practiced with other individuals, with institutions, with society and with self. 2. COURAGE - this means daring to attempt difficult things that are good. 3. PEACEABILITY - this means calmness, peacefulness and serenity. 4. SELF-RELIANCE AND POTENTIAL - this means individuality awareness and development of gifts and uniqueness. 5. SELF DISCIPLINED AND MODERATION -it refers to physical, mental and financial discipline. 6. FIDELITY AND CHASITY - refers to the values and security of fidelity within marriage and of restraint and limits before marriage. FILIPINO VALUES and CHARACTERISTICS The characteristic that makes a Filipino vary from different society is his uniquely blended culture and values from different influences. Filipino values, for reason of several influences that shaped its identity, are bipolar like a coin that has two sides. They may either be positive or negative in polarity. Let us take for example the value of utang na loob, or debt of gratitude. The value of utang na loob, the altruistic drawing of interior goodness of a person by returning a debt of gratitude, is by itself positive. However, when one is coerced to honor a debt of gratitude and return the favor, then it becomes negative. Due to this ambivalent of Filipino values, they have the potential of being used for good and evil. They may either help or hinder personal and national development, depending on how they are understood or practices or lived. To shape the Filipino society into a successful and progressive nation, there is a need to reevaluate the different values that influence every Filipino individual’s action to a set of circumstances. We need to identify the positive side of every Filipino value and develop them to yield a more successful and developed society. Okay so let’s cite some of the Faces of Filipino Values and its results Strengths of the Filipino Character Results Bayanihan/ Unity Camaraderie and feeling of closeness to one another; foundation for unity as well as sense of social justice; connotation of getting along with people Family Oriented Feeling of belongingness and rootedness and a basic sense of security Faith and Religiosity Courage, daring, optimism, inner peace, as well as the capacity to genuinely accept tragedy and death Politeness Customed to using “po” and “opo” to the elderly Gratefulness Warm friendly feelings of gratitude Bravery Admirable quality of being able to confront frightening things Hospitable When a person visits a friend’s house, the host greets him or her with a very warm welcome Generosity and Helpfulness Even when we have very little, we always share with those around us Since we have discussed the strengths, we should also discuss the weaknesses of the Filipino Character. Weaknesses of the Filipino Character Results Extreme Personalism Leads to graft and corruption Lack of Discipline Inefficient and wasteful work systems, violation of rules leading to more serious transgressions and a casual work ethics leading to carelessness and lack of follow through. Kanya-Kanya Syndrome Dampening of cooperative and community spirit and in the trampling upon the rights of others Lack of Self-Analysis and Self-Reflection Emphasis on form more than substance Self-Awareness and Filipino Values https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-self-awareness-2795023 Self-awareness involves being aware of different aspects of the self-including traits, behaviors, and feelings. Essentially, it is a psychological state in which oneself becomes the focus of attention. Self-awareness is one of the first components of the self-concept to emerge. While self-awareness is something that is central to who you are, it is not something that you are acutely focused on at every moment of every day. Instead, self-awareness becomes woven into the fabric of who you are and emerges at different points depending on the situation and your personality. People are not born completely self-aware. Yet research has also found that infants do have a rudimentary sense of self-awareness. Infants possess the awareness that they are a separate being from others, which is evidenced by behaviors such as the rooting reflex in which an infant searches for a nipple when something brushes against his or her face. Researchers have also found that even newborns are able to differentiate between self- and non-self-touch. You might hear people talk about self-awareness as an important skill — not just for kids, but for adults, too. Self-awareness is the ability to tune in to your own feelings, thoughts, and actions. When people are self-aware, they understand their strengths and challenges and know what helps them thrive. They also understand that how they see themselves may be different from how others see them. People with strong self-awareness skills can: Recognize their strengths and challenges Understand and talk about their needs and feelings Recognize other people’s needs and feelings See how their behavior affects others Develop a growth mindset and learn from their mistakes When people understand themselves better, it’s easier for them to build positive self-esteem. That’s especially important for people who learn and think differently and who struggle with certain skills and tasks. Self-awareness gives them a way to look not just at their challenges, but also to see what they’re good at. The PDP (personal development plan), also called an IDP (individual development plan) or a PEP (personal enterprise plan), usually includes a statement of one's aspirations, strengths or competencies, education and training, and stages or steps to indicate how the plan is to be realized. Personal development plans may also include a statement of one's career and lifestyle priorities, career positioning, analysis of opportunities and risks, and alternative plans (Plan B), and a curriculum vitae (CV).(Wikipedia) https://www.managers.org.uk/knowledge-and- insights/research/personal-development-planning/ Nationalism and Patriotism Program Concept of nationalism Nationalism is a devotion of love for one’s country.
