The Strength and Weaknesses of the Filipino Character: A Socio-Cultural Issue** **After successful completion of this module, students should be able to:** 1. **Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino character; and** 2. **Cite ways by which schools can counteract the weaknesses of the Filipino character.** **Weaknesses of the Filipino Character** 1. **Extreme family centeredness** **To the disadvantage of consideration for the greater community or for the common good, excessive care for the family promotes the creation of an in-group to which the Filipino is strongly committed.** 2. **Extreme personalism** **Filipinos perceive the world through the lens of interpersonal connections, and the degree to which one can relate personally to things and people determines how we acknowledge their existence and value.** 3. **Lack of Discipline** **Filipinos have a relaxed and casual approach to time and space, which manifests as a lack of precision and compulsiveness, poor time management, and procrastination.** 4. **Passivity and lack of initiative** **Filipinos are typically passive and lack initiative. Waiting for instructions on what needs to be done. There is a significant amount of reliance on others.** 5. **Colonial mentality** **Filipinos have a relaxed and casual approach to time and space, which manifests as a lack of precision and compulsiveness, poor time management, and procrastination.** 6. **Kanya-kanya syndrome, talangka mentality** **Is usually done by *tsismis* and *intriga*. It is usually seen in personal ambition. This results in decreasing cooperativeness and community spirit.** 7. **Lack of self-analysis and self-reflection** **The Filipino has a tendency to be shallow and a little flighty. In the face of significant issues, both social and personal, there is a lack of analysis or contemplation. We joke the most serious issues, which prevents us from digging deeper into the issue.** 8. **Emphasis on porma rather than substance** **It is the tendency of the Filipinos to be content with rhetoric as a substitute for reality.** **Strengths of the Filipino Character** **1.Pakikipagkapwa-tao** **2. Substances classified as drugs include alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine.** 10. **Terrorism** **Terrorism has an immediate negative impact on property and the money required to restore infrastructure and rebuild damaged buildings.
