During his time at Ateneo, Rizal's academic standing upon graduation was sobresaliente. He had a favorite professor at Ateneo named Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez. He wrote A La Juventud Filipina during his time at Ateneo. The fencing team was the extracurricular activity that Rizal was involved in at Ateneo. Rizal completed a Bachelor of Arts. Then, Jose Rizal initially enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the year 1877 with the course Philosophy and Letters. Rizal decided to shift from his initial course to Medicine at UST because he wanted to help cure his mother’s eye ailment. A La Juventud Filipina was his literary work that was criticized during the Spanish colonization. Compañerismo was the organization that Rizal joined, which was composed of Filipino students at UST. His academic performance was average at UST. Diariong Tagalog was the publication that Rizal contributed to while at UST, which aimed at reforming the Spanish colonial government. Moreover, Rizal advocated for reforms and equality through his writing during his time at UST. He excelled in Mathematics during his studies at UST. The main reason Rizal was dissatisfied with his studies at UST was because of the oppressive Spanish friars. Rizal got involved in a conflict with the Dominican friars. While at UST, Rizal experienced racial discrimination. After UST, Rizal attended the University of Madrid. Rizal contributed to La Solidaridad while in Barcelona. His primary field of study was medicine. The main reason Jose Rizal went to Barcelona was to further his medical education. During his time in Madrid, Rizal became a member of the Propaganda Movement. He completed his medical degree in Madrid in the year 1885. While in Barcelona, he developed a stronger desire for Filipino independence, which shaped his view on colonial rule. Rizal’s goal in writing to the Spanish government was to petition for reforms in the Philippines while in Madrid. In the year 1887, Rizal completed his doctorate in Germany. Rizal was greatly influenced by the works of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant. The primary subject of Rizal’s thesis at the University of Heidelberg was ophthalmology. Rizal sent a letter to his friend Ferdinand Blumentritt describing the advancements of German cities. Rizal’s impression of the Germans was that they were industrious and disciplined. The primary reason for Rizal’s departure from Germany to return to the Philippines was to publish Noli Me Tangere. During his time in Paris, he engaged in attending theater performances. While in Europe, Rizal was influenced by Victor Hugo's writings; he was a French writer. Rizal studied at the British Museum and was known for his research on historical documents about Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas. Jose Rizal visited the United States after leaving the Philippines in 1888. Rizal’s main reason for traveling to the United States was to gather support for Philippine independence. During his trip to Japan, Rizal stayed in Tokyo at a hotel. The significant event Rizal experienced in Hong Kong was being reunited with his family. When Rizal stayed in Hong Kong, his views on colonialism strengthened his belief in peaceful reform. The political event in Hong Kong that Rizal witnessed and that influenced his writings was about the 1888 Hong Kong protest. The primary medium of communication between Rizal and his romantic interests while he was abroad was through letters. José Rizal's novels feature a character inspired by his love for Leonor Rivera; this character is from Noli Me Tangere. With Leonor Rivera, Rizal’s relationship was most affected by political circumstances. Rizal's relationship with O-Sei San is unique compared to his other romances because it is the least documented. O-Sei San was known for her artistic talent. Rizal and Josephine Bracken were ultimately prevented from being together because of Rizal’s excommunication.
