Medical Terminology The respiratory system partners with the circulatory system to deliver oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the cells of the body. Breathing is respiration - Breathing in (inspiration or inhalation) pulls air containing oxygen into the lungs where it passes into the circulatory system - Breathing out (expiration or exhalation) Carbon dioxide is released when air is pushed out of the lungs The term “ventilation” is used to describe the movement of air into the lungs, whether it is a natural or an artificial activity. Hyperpnea / Hypopnea = increased / decreased depth of breathing Tachypnea / Bradypnea = increased / decreased rate of breathing – 12 to 20 BPM in adult Hyperventilation / Hypoventilation = increased / decreased air movement into the lungs air = pneum/o, aer/o spir/o = to breathe -pnea = breathing oxygen = ox/i, ox/o, oxy- carbon dioxide = capn/o Oxyhemoglobin oxy- = oxygen hem/o = blood -globin = protein substance Deoxyhemoglobin De- = without oxy- = oxygen hem/o = blood -globin = protein substance The respiratory system is anatomically divided into : - conduction passageways The upper respiratory tract (the nose, pharynx, and larynx) The lower respiratory tract (the trachea, bronchial tree, and lungs) - gas exchange surfaces. The gas exchange surfaces are the alveoli of the lungs and the cells of the body.
