STAGES AND MODELS OF Oral Communication COMMUNICA LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define communication Distinguish the unique Differentiate the various features of one models of communication communication process from the other STAGES OF COMMUNICA TION 1.CONCEPTUA LIZING In the first step, the communicator develops or conceptualizes an idea to be sent. It is also known as the planning stage since in this stage the communicator plans the subject matter of communication. is the process of turning though ts into communication. The enc 2. oder uses a 'medium' to send th e message — a phone call, em ENCODING ail, text message, face-to-face meeting, or other communicatio n tool. The level of conscious th ought that goes into encoding messages may vary. 3. TRANSMITTIN the flow of messages over the chosen channel. Transmission G confirms the medium selected during the process of encoding and keeps the communication channel free from interference or noise so that the message reaches the receiver without any disturbance. 4. RECEIVING To receive a message, a person must interpret something said or done by another person the sender and give it a name and develop a feeling about it. The receiver's job is to then seek to understand whatever it is the sender wants to communicate. 5. DECODIN is how an audience member is G able to understand, and interpret the message. It is a process of interpretation and translation of coded information into a comprehensible form. 6. RESPONDIN means giving feedback to another communicator Gin an interpersonal exchange. 7. VERIFYING The receiver can verify that the communication was effective if he received it at the right time and understood every detail about the message and reacted towards it. MODELS OF COMMUNICA TION MODELS OF COMMUNICATION The process of communication can be explained through the various models of communication constructed by the expert through the years. 1. LINEAR MODEL / SHANNON WEAVER MODEL this model shows a straight path of relaying information. The speaker is the sender, and he or she conveys his or her message directly to the audience. (Aristotle, David K. Berio and Roman Jacobson) II. INTERACTIVE MODEL this model takes into consideration feedback from the receiver. When the receiver gives feedback, he or she becomes the sender and the original sender becomes the receiver of the feedback. (Wilbur Schramm, Ferdinand de Saussure) III. TRANSACTIONAL shows communication as occurring continuously and MODEL simultaneously between or among people. It shows communication as a two-way process in which participants are constantly sending and receiving messages. IV. SOCIAL-CULTURAL MODEL This model stresses the strong influence and social and cultural elements like customs, traditions, beliefs, attitudes, clothing styles or thinking patterns of the group of people communicating with one another. ANY QUESTIONS? PERFORMANCE TASK #2 Directions: Come up with your own model of communication. Make a drawing that shows your model of communication that will include a short description of the components or parts of your model. Use a special feature or characteristic of your model.
