(Two terms that are often interchangeable) The terms 'modern' and 'contemporary' refer to vastly different periods. DIFFERENT OVERVIEWS OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS HISTORICAL STYLISTIC CULTURAL HISTORICAL OVERVIEW Historically speaking: MODERN ART - 1880s until 1960s CONTEMPORARY ART - Beyond 1960s and still emerging Modern art has laid the groundwork for contemporary art as both seem to have arisen directly as a result of technological advancements in society. STYLISTIC OVERVIEW Artists have turned away from realistic representation and the depiction of the human figure since the early 20th century. Abstraction ! Contemporary Artist CULTURAL OVERVIEW MODERN: Neo-Realism Dealing realistically with the events leading up after the World War II CONTEMPORARY: Social Realism Freedom and liberty to experiment with all styles CULTURAL OVERVIEW Example: Ibn Saud Ahmad (Zamboanga)- hybrid mixture of local Subanen and traditional Maguindanao Muslim Cultures. Cultural Context: Indigenous Southeast Asian & Philippine Muslim Medium: Watercolor Subject Matter: People of his CHARACTERISTICS OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS INTEGRATIVE Freedom to integrate any medium and any form or style in order to express artistic intention, without being limited to conform to a stylistic Example: Collage art, mixed forms of assemblage, different trend. variants of kinetic art as well as different categories of photography, animations and 2. PROCESS-BASED The artist starts not with a final product in mind, but instead begins with a development of a concept and then subsequently proceeds with realizing the idea. BERNARD COHEN 3. SITE-SPECIFIC This allows the artwork’s meaning to have a direct relationship to a specific location where it is seen or experienced. Changing the location of the work would mean a change in the interpretation of its value or meaning. Example: A glow in the dark exhibit is best placed indoors. BULUL (RICE DEITY) HAGABI 4. COLLABORATIVE The end product is created with the involvement of two or more artists. Collaborative artworks often present multiple perspectives on one main idea, factored with spontaneous results, and thus Borlongan, Justiniani, and Garibay Art Fair Philippines 2017 possess more complex avenues for analysis. Example: Collaboration can involve a musician working with a visual artist, an architect with a dance artist or a theatre practitioner working 5. INTERACTIVE It recognizes how the audience has the potential to change or add to the meaning of an artwork. Example: Some interactive art installations let the observer or visitor “walk” in, on, and around them; some others ask the artist or the spectators to become part of the artwork. 5. INTERACTIVE 6. CONTEMPORARY ART IS NOT CONFINED TO THE MUSEUM They are also found in galleries, art schools, side streets, and public spaces like the train or bus stations, shopping centers or parks. Example: The 20-meter-high underpass columns in Manila are all painted through the Urban Artscape Project 7. PRACTICE OF SELLING PAINTINGS Many artworks are posted online. This means that anyone who has access to the internet can view the artwork and actually purchase an artwork of an artist who is in the Philippines. Example: FilipinoArt.ph is an online marketplace that showcases emerging and seasoned Filipino artists and their 8. CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS CAN BE SELF- TAUGHT They can learn art without formal education. Example: Watching Youtube videos, copying the masters and studying their art, or talking to other artists. ELISEO PERRERAS 9. ORIGINALITY IS NOT AN ISSUE IN CONTEMPORARY ARTS An artist can get another artist’s work and add to it, redesign or interpret it using other mediums or materials. Example: The portrait of Marilyn Monroe appears in a variety of colors as it was interpreted by Andy Warhol. It is not how much money they make out of the final artwork. It is the movement in dance that matters, or the plot that is communicated to the film viewers that is important. Given these characteristics, it can be said that contemporary art is as statement that an artist makes about life, thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and many other things that define human life.
