Cause and effect essays examine the reasons a situation or event occurs and the outcomes that are involved as a result. Example: Why do people overeat? What happens as a result of overeating? Defining Cause and Effect What causes people to overeat? Stress Skipping Meals Boredom What are the effects of overeating? Obesity Health Problems Fatigue ©McGraw-Hill Education Organizing the Essay There are several ways to organize a cause and effect essay. Some essays might focus on causes while others might focus only on effects. Some topics require a combination of both (to balance your paper). The key is to clearly discuss causes and effects without mixing them together or forgetting to give details for one or the other. ©McGraw-Hill Education Organizing the Essay Discussion: Consider each of the following scenarios and decide whether it requires discussing causes, effects, or both. 1. A young couple decides to buy a two-family house and rent out the top floor to tenants. 2. A new television reality show becomes an instant sensation, and the “actors” achieve instant fame. 3. Residents of an assisted living facility meet with administrators to address the increase in residents’ fees. ©McGraw-Hill Education Organizing the Essay The type of essay you write depends on your topic and main point: moving out of your family home (C) or impact of sth./so. on your life (E). The outline - Introduction/Body/Conclusion. Transition paragraph. The purpose of your essay is to prove your Thesis Statement.
