MEDIA AND INFORMATI ON Ms. Kimberly L. Paderan LITERACY “The purpose of this subject is to enable students to show and make informed judgments as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and producers of information and media messages in their own right.” What does Media mean? To the young minds, media stands for glamour, larger than life events, a world of movie actors, sports star, and all popular celebrities making a statement on TV, print, radio and of course who can doubt influence of facebook , instagram and other social media channels. Why is MIL necessary to learn and understand? As a student, in what ways learning MIL benefit you? You will learn to think critically, become a smart consumer of products and information, recognize point of view, create media responsibly, identify the role of media in our culture and understand the author’s goal. Lesson 1: INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY How often you use Media in communication? What is MEDIA, INFORMATION and LITERACY? ❖ Media is a method of communication or a form of publication commonly used to distribute news and information. ❖ Information entered into and store in a computer, it is generally to as data. ❖ Literacy is a broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from study, experiences, instruction, signals or symbols. What is Media and Informatio n Literacy? Media and Information Literacy Plays an important role in communication and information dissemination. Media and Information will enable us to access, understand and create communications in a variety of contexts in the form of accessing, understanding and creating media information. Accessing Media and Information The use, navigate, manage, store and retrieve content in print, radio and online. Understanding Media and Information Viewers ability to read, deconstruct and evaluate media contexts and motivations. A critique view quality of material being broadcast and shared. Producing Media and Information Viewers or netizens ability to produce, distribute and publish ideas and information via mainstream media or social media. Be able to use media responsibly and to contribute democratic process using electronic media. Be able to transact and post online. Media Literacy MEDIA LITERACY ❖It is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media messages of all kinds. MEDIA LITERACY Today, many people get most of their information through complex combinations of text, images, and sounds we receive from television, radio, newspaper, magazines, books, billboards, signs, packaging, marketing materials, video games, recorded music, the Internet and other forms of media. Media literacy skills can help children, youth and adults: Understand how media messages create meaning. Identify who created a particular media message. Recognize what the media maker want us to believe or do. Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies. Discover the untold part of the story. Evaluate media messages based on our own experiences, beliefs and values. What is the importance of Media Literacy in Education? Media Literacy Education helps to develop critical thinking and active participation in our media culture. The goal is to give youth and adults greater freedom by empowering them to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Media Literacy Education is important to the: A. In School B. In the Community C. In Public Life What is the importance of Media Literacy Education IN THE SCHOOL? A. In School It helps in Educational standards in many states – in language arts, social studies, health, and other subject it include the skills of accessing, analyzing and evaluating information found in media. What is the importance of Media Literacy Education IN THE COMMUNITY? B. In the Community Media literacy skills can empower people and communities usually shut out of the media system to tell their own stories, share their perspectives, and work for justice. What is the importance of Media Literacy Education IN THE PUBLIC? C. In Public Life Media Literacy help us understand how media create cultures and how the “media monopoly” affects our politics and our society. Media literacy encourages and empowers youth and adults to change our media system, and to create new , more just and more accessible media networks. Basic Concepts of Media Literacy 1. Media Construct our Culture Our society and culture – even our perception of reality – is shaped by the information and images we receive via the media. Today, the most powerful storytellers are television, movies, video games, and the Internet. 2. Media messages affect our thoughts, attitudes and actions Media are such a powerful cultural force, and why the media industry is such a big business. 3. No one tells the whole story Every media maker has a point of view. Every good story highlights some information and leaves out the rest. 4. Media messages reflect the values and viewpoints of media makers Everyone has a point of view. Our values and viewpoints influence our choice of words, sounds and images we use to communicate through media. 5. Individuals construct their own meanings from media Although media makers attempt to convey specific messages, people receive and interpret them differently, based on their own prior knowledge and experience, their values, and their beliefs. Information Literacy INFORMATION LITERACY ❖The ability to recognize when information is needed, and to locate, evaluate, and effectively communicate information in its various formats. INFORMATION LITERACY ❖It is a set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze and use information. How does Media and Information Literacy affects the development of individuals and society? Media and Information serves as channels of communication and tools for the development of individuals. It equips citizens with the necessary competencies to seek and enjoy the full benefits of this fundamental human right. Technology Literacy TECHNOLOGY LITERACY The ability of an individual, working independently and with others responsibly, appropriately and effectively use technology tools. Technological literacy prepares individuals to make well-informed choices in their role as consumers. The world is full of products and services that promise to make people’s lives easier, more enjoyable, more efficient, or healthier, and more and more of these products appear every year.
