Review: Rome, Italy 1.) Three geographic features which made it easier to unify Italy were: a.)No small, isolated valley b.) Broad, fertile plains c.) The Apennine Mts. were not very rugged 2.) A dictator was chosen to rule Rome during times of war. 3.) The Romans did not sell all conquered people into slavery. 4.) Rome took very harsh actions against Carthage after the death of Hannibal because they saw Carthage as a continued rival. 5.) Julius Caesar brought civil war to Rome by defying the senate and bringing his army across the Rubicon River. 6.) Augustus laid the foundation for a stable government by creating a well-trained civil service to enforce the laws. 7.) The 200 year period when peace, order and prosperity flourished is known as the Pax Romana. 8.) The Romans emphasized grandeur and built mighty monuments to characterize its architecture. 9.) The Romans supplied their cities with water by having engineers build aqueducts. 10.) “A person must be tried before a jury of his peers” is not one of the common basic principles of law developed by Romans. 11.) Christianity spread through the work of missionaries such as Paul. This allowed the religion to grow from a sect of Judaism into a world religion. 12.) Women served as teachers, supported Christian communities, and won converts to Christianity. They could not however, become Church officials. 13.) Constantine’s Edict of Milan ended the persecution of Christians. 14.) Roman art and literature blended Roman civilization with that of the Greeks. 15.) During the empire, the Roman legal system contributed to relative stability throughout their lands. 16.) One factor that did not contribute to the fall of Rome was the rapid spread of Christianity. 17.) Diocletian and Constantine are famous because they both tried to restore order to the Roman empire. 18.) The emperor Justinian was an autocrat ( ruler with complete authority) that created a code of laws that helped to contribute to the strength of the Byzantine Empire. 19.) The Byzantine Empire became a buffer for invaders coming from Asia and the Middle East. 20.) A dispute over the use of *icons lead to a permanent split between the Byzantine Church and the Roman Catholic Church known as a *schism (permanent split).
