## Medical Surgeries ### B-Hyperthermia: Hyperthermia (thermal therapy), the generation of temperatures greater than physiologic fever range (above 41.5°C [106.7°F]), has been used for many years to destroy tumors in human cancers. ### Effects of Hyperthermia: - Hyperthermia is most effective when combined with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or biologic therapy. - The addition of heat to radiation therapy damages tumor cells so that they cannot repair themselves after radiation therapy. - Hyperthermia is thought to alter cellular membrane permeability when used with chemotherapy, allowing for an increased uptake of the chemotherapeutic agent. - Hyperthermia may enhance function of immune system cells, such as macrophages and T cells. ### C. Pain Management - Pain related to cancer may be caused by direct tumor infiltration of bones, nerves, viscera, or soft tissue or by prior therapeutic measures (surgery, radiation). ### D. Palliative Care - Palliative care, also know as comfort care, is primarily directed at providing relief to a terminally ill person through symptom management. The goal is not to cure but to provide comfort and maintain the highest possible quality of life for as long as possible. The focus of palliative care is on a compassionate, specialized care for the living. ### Nursing Assessment and Intervention 1. Evaluate objectively the nature of the patient’s pain: location, duration, quality, and impact on daily activities.
