Science as an idea Science as a body of knowledge Science as an intellectual activity Science as personal and social activity What is SCIENCE? came from Latin word “scientia” - KNOWLEDGE a system of acquiring knowledge that has been produced and validated by systematic process of inquiry as a process used to solve problems or develop an understanding of nature that involves testing possible answers. Scientific knowledge – outcome of DISCOVERY Concerned with “know- why” What is SCIENCE? Science as an idea. It includes ideas, theories, laws and all available systematic explanations and observations about the natural and physical world. Science as a body of knowledge. It is a subject or a discipline that deals with the process of learning about the natural and physical world. This is what we refer to as school science. Science as an intellectual activity. It encompasses a systematic and practical study of the natural and physical world. This process of study involves systematic observation and experimentation. Science as personal and social activity. This explains that scientific knowledge and activities are interwoven with people’s lives to develop better understanding of the world around them and to raise the quality of life. What is SCIENCE? What is TECHNOLOGY ? came from Greek word “techne” meaning “art, skill, or cunning of hand It is the application of scientific knowledge, laws and principles to produce services, materials, tools and machines aimed at solving real-world problem. Dynamic cumulative system of reproducible methods, techniques, and processes which may be derived from empirical “know-how”. What is TECHNOLOGY ? It refers to methods, systems and devices which are the result of scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes.
