iACADEMY The premier school for tech and design Introduction to STECHSOC WEEK 1 Prepared by: Ms. Rugiemay C. Vargas What piece of technology is indispensable for you? In your opinion, what is the most significant invention? WHY STUDY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY? Understanding the uses and impacts of science and technology on our society and in nation-building give us an appreciation on the things we usually take for granted. WHY STUDY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY? Beyond mere appreciation of the scientific knowledge and technological advancements around us, we will also be exploring the historical, social, cultural, ethical, moral, political, and economic aspects of science and technology. Identify the fields of science and forms of technology present Identify the fields of science and forms of technology present Identify the fields of science and forms of technology present Learning Outcomes (1) Define Science according to various philosophers of Science (2) Understand the interrelationships of Science, Technology, and Science and the various fields of study under STECHSOC. 10 THINGS PHILOSOPHERS WANTED YOU TO KNOW ABOUT STS (1) Science is not about finding confirming evidence for a theory, but about striving hard to find disconfirming evidence ― Karl Popper (2) All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered, the point is to discover them. ― Galileo Galilei 10 THINGS PHILOSOPHERS WANTED YOU TO KNOW ABOUT STS (3) It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. ― Aristotle (4) Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems. ― Rene Descartes 10 THINGS PHILOSOPHERS WANTED YOU TO KNOW ABOUT STS (5) Everything that is possible demands to exist ― Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (6) All human knowledge begins with intuitions, proceeds from thence to concepts, and ends with ideas. ― Immanuel Kant 10 THINGS PHILOSOPHERS WANTED YOU TO KNOW ABOUT STS (7) But arts and sciences should be like mines, where the noise of new works and further advances is heard on every side. ― Francis Bacon (8) Science may set limits to knowledge, but should not set limits to imagination. ― Bertrand Russell 10 THINGS PHILOSOPHERS WANTED YOU TO KNOW ABOUT STS (9) No great discovery was ever made without a bold guess. ― Isaac Newton (10) The greatest scientists are artists as well. ― Albert Einstein REFLECTION Directions: With your groupmates, share with each other your own understanding of what "science", "technology", and "society" is. After sharing, come up with unified definitions for your group. You will then share this with the rest of the class. Time limit: 15 minutes. MICHAEL E. SMITH'S Three-Part Definition of Science A method for gathering knowledge about the natural and social world. It gives primacy to reason and observation. Has a critical spirit. Claims or hypotheses are constantly tested through observation and experiment, and findings are always tentative, incomplete, and open to challenge. It is complex which consists of an interconnected network of diverse evidence and theory, and its content and findings are evaluated by communities of scientists. Science, Technology, and Society is interdisciplinary and political. REFLECTION (15 points) Choose a specific societal issue and answer the following questions: 1. How does this issue personally affect you? 2. How does it impact society as a whole? 3. What are the different science and technology components of the issue? iACADEMY The premier school for tech and design
