Internationalism Review Important definitions Isolationism a country that completely opts out of participating in international social, economic, political, and military affairs. Unilateralism Motivated to respond to events on their own, or unilaterally. Bilateralism When two countries are motivated by the same issue or need, they may take bilateral action. Agreements between two countries. Multilateralism Involves several countries working together on a given issue. Supranationalism Agreeing to abide by the decisions of an international organization made up of independently appointed officials or representatives elected by member states. Important definitions Four motives of national interest Peace & Security, Economic Stability, Self Determination, and Humanitarianism Global Village The idea that, due to communication and transportation technology improvements, the world is much more interconnected NGO Non-Governmental Organization (eg. amnesty international) Veto Powers The power given to the 5 permanent UNSC members to strike down any proposed resolutions. Odious Debt Debt that should not be enforceable due to it being accrued by a despotic government to strengthen its regime. International Organizations UN (United Nations) A diplomatic body to ensure world peace after WW2 - an example of multilateralism. EU (European Union) An economic union of European states - an example of Supranationalism WTO (World Trade Organization) Established to promote economic stability through collaborating with the world community. WHO (World Health Organization) Coordinate information about diseases, Collect statistics on nutrition, population planning, sanitation, and the health of mothers and children. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Political and military alliance between North American and European Countries International Organizations UNESCO United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), promotes cooperation and respect for all civilizations and cultures. The United Nations Security Council Made up of 15 states (5 permanent with veto powers, 10 non permanent), passes binding resolutions and greenlights actions about matters of global security (like peacekeeping). General Assembly Made up of all member nations who each get one vote, passes non-binding resolutions on general matters of global concern. Peacekeeping Sent to conflict zones ONLY after a ceasefire has been negotiated. Criticisms of peace keeping Hindered by rules of engagement (consent, impartiality, and self defence). Rwanda and Bosnia & Herzegovina are examples of this. Why were the rules of engagement created? To respect the sovereignty of the nations involved in the conflict Foreign Policy How can countries support internationalism Supporting peacekeeping missions, following international law, and giving foreign aid. Why would countries shy away from increasing the extent to which they participate in internationalism Conflicts with nationalism and sovereignty. How can countries promote peace in other countries? Sanctions and Incentives. How can individuals impact foreign policy legally? Exercising freedom of speech to praise or criticize government policy, joining an NGO, like Amnesty International, that has a reputation for pressuring governments to act, organizing a rally or petition to express views on government policy For All the Marbles What is the age old question that defines this unit?
