Summary
This document discusses the nature of intervention research, including its types like randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized control trials. It also details steps in describing the research intervention process, emphasizing the importance of background information, group comparisons, intervention procedures, and basis for such procedures. The document could be useful for students of research methods and social sciences.

INTERVENTION RESEARCH OF AND ITS TYPES 3. STEPS IN DESCRIBING THE RESEARCH INTERVENTION PROCESS 01 Intervention in research pertains to the implementation of strategies or measures NATURE OF aimed at bringing about positive changes or improvement in a specific context or RESEARCH situation. It is referred to as what is going to happen to the subjects of the study. INTERVENTION This decision covers who will receive the intervention and to what extent it will be applied to them. 02 INTERVENTION RESEARCH IT MEANS... An interventional research/study is one in which the participants receive some kind of intervention (e.g. new medicine) in order to evaluate it. Participants are assigned to receive one or more interventions (or placebo or no intervention). 03 INTERVENTION RESEARCH IT MEANS... The goal of these kinds of studies is to test the efficacy of specific treatments or preventive measures by assigning individual subjects to one or more treatments or prevention options. There are two major types of intervention research; randomized control trials (RCT) and non-randomized control trials. 03 RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIALS WHAT IS RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIALS (RTC) ? A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) is a type of scientific study used to assess the effectiveness of an intervention, such as a medication or therapy. Participants are randomly assigned to two groups: the "intervention group" (which receives the actual treatment) and the "control group" (which receives a placebo or no treatment). Random assignment is crucial to avoid bias, and the differences in outcomes between the two groups are measured to determine if the intervention is effective. THE MAJOR TYPES OF THE MAJOR TYPES OF INTERVENTIONS TESTED IN RCT INCLUDE: Pharmacological – Testing drugs or medications. Behavioral – Assessing lifestyle changes, habits, or psychological therapies. Surgical – Evaluating surgical procedures or techniques. Educational – Implementing health education programs or training. Preventive – Testing vaccines or methods aimed at preventing diseases THE MAJOR TYPES OF NON-RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS In this design, participants are assigned to different intervention arms without following a “random” procedure. Such design can suggest a possible relationship between the intervention and the outcome, it is susceptible to bias and hence validity of the results obtained is low. OTHER TYPES OF BEFORE-AFTER (PRE-POST) STUDIES In this study, a variable of interest is measured before and after an intervention in the same participants. The only basis of deriving a conclusion from these studies is the temporal relationship of the measurements to the intervention. However, the outcome can instead be related to other changes that occurred around the same time as the intervention. OTHER TYPES OF CLUSTER RANDOMIZED TRIALS Sometimes, an intervention cannot be easily administered to individuals but can be applied to groups. In such cases, a trial can be done by assigning “clusters” to receive or not receive the intervention. However, such studies need a somewhat larger sample size than individual-randomized studies and the use of special statistical tools for data analysis. STEPS IN DESCRIBING THE RESEARCH INTERVENTION PROCESS WRITE THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION. It is an introductory paragraph that explains the relevance of the intervention to the study conducted. It also includes the context and duration of the treatment. DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUP. State what will happen and what will not both in the experimental and control groups. This will clearly illustrate the parameters of the research groups. DESCRIBE THE PROCEDURES OF THE INTERVENTION. In particular, describe how will the experimental group receive or experience the condition. It includes how will the intervention happen to achieve the desired result of the study. EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF PROCEDURES. The reason for choosing the intervention and process should have clear and concrete reasons. The researcher explains why the procedures are necessary. In addition, the theoretical and conceptual basis for choosing the procedures is presented to establish the validity of the procedures. THANK YOU!!
