Chapter 9: Earth’s Ocean Basins What we know about ridges so far… ○ Mid-ocean ridges. ○ Central rift, ○ Land fissures. How much of Earth’s surface is covered by water? ○ 71%. Ocean’s Depth ○ Average ocean depth = 3000 m (9800 ft) We would not have oceans if we did not have ocean basins to catch water. So how do ocean basins exist? ○ Ocean basins exist because oceanic crusts sit lower than continental crust. Sits lower because Oceanic crust density is thinner and denser than the puffed up continental. Isostasy ○ Explains where the crust ‘sits’ in the mantle. [ Got tired.
