Psychologists must protect their participants from mental and physical harm. b. The participants’ best interests need to be kept foremost in the researcher’s mind. Informed consent Ethics in Deception Debriefing Psychologic Withdrawl from a study al Research Confidentiality Informed Consent All participants must know what their participation will involve and what risks might develop. Participants must retain the right to withdraw from the study at any time and for any reason “Informed consent form” All data must remain Confidential completely confidential and ity if possible, anonymous. Debriefing At the end of all studies, the true aims and purpose of the research must be revealed to the participants. Any deception must be revealed and justified. All participants must leave the study without undue stress. An ethical issue that psychologists debate extensively. Why? 1. Telling the participants beforehand what the study is about alters the participant’s behaviour and invalidates the data Deception (Hawthorne effect). 2. The researcher must ensure that the deception will not harm the participants. 3. Participants will be told the true nature of the study as soon as possible.
