Let’s Explore and Discover The ways in which we communicate with each other in today’s world are wide ranging. We live in a time where you can tweet how your day was or post the events of your whole day on Instagram. If those are not still enough to explain how happy you are or tiring your day is, you can upload a video in YouTube or make a TikTok Video. Indeed, communication nowadays comes in varied forms. When meaning is communicated through combinations of two or more modes, it is called multimodal text. You will learn more of this as we go on, but let us first familiarize ourselves with the different processes or modes in communicating. What is Multimodal Text? When we communicate we use different proceses or what we call modes. When we combine two or more modes the texts we Multimodal Text create are called multimodal. is a text that is a combination of Modes can be through the use of language (spoken or written words), two or more visual (symbol, colour, texture, line, shape), audio (noises, silence, sounds, of volume, beat, tempo, pitch, and rhythm), space (scale, boundaries, words. direction, layout, and organisation of objects) and gesture (facial expression, eye movements, dance, acting and action sequences). Examples of Multimodal Texts are: a powerpoint presentation in which we use text to explain and pictures that suit the topic a poster or tarpaulin in which we get the general message through looking at the colors, images, design and texts in it a vlog which sound effects and the spoken language of the vlogger contributes effectively in the overall appeal and message of the video. a picture book, in which the textual and visual elements are arranged on individual pages that contribute to an overall set of bound pages a webpage, in which elements such as sound effects, oral language, written language, music and still or moving images are combined A live dance performance, in which gesture, music, and space are the main elements. 1 Let’s Practice Activity 1 Directions: Identify whether the text inside the box is multimodal or not. This is a Greek word that means transformation or change in shape. Insects have two common types of metamorphosis. Grasshoppers, crickets, dragonflies, and cockroaches have incomplete metamorphosis. The young (called a nymph) usually look like small adults but without the wings. Butterflies, moths, beetles, flies and bees have complete metamorphosis. The young (called a larva instead of a nymph) is very different from the adults. It also usually eats different types of food. There are four stages in the metamorphosis of butterflies and moths: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Egg Eggs are laid on plants by the adult female butterfly. These plants will then become the food for the hatching caterpillars. Caterpillar: The Feeding Stage The next stage is the larva. This is also called a caterpillar if the insect is a butterfly or a moth. Pupa: The Transition Stage When the caterpillar is full grown and stops eating, it becomes a pupa. The pupa of butterflies is also called a chrysalis. Adult: The Reproductive Stage The adult stage is what most people think of when they think of butterflies 6.
