How many status updates have you posted in your social media? Did you checked your facebook/Instagram/twitter as you wake up? Do you follow any celebrity in his/ her social media account? If you happen to be “guilty as charged” in most of these questions, I guarantee that you are a digital native. One of the reason is from the moment you were born, you were surrounded by technology, you are surrounded by ICT. A person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and therefore familiar with computers and the Internet from an early age is called Digital Native. 3 ICT The terminology information and communication technology (ICT) collectively refers to the technologies, both software and hardware, that permit humans to communicate with one another. It is a common mistake that ICT is Internet or computer alone. Primarily, it is any form of technology that enables you to communicate. What’s New ICT TODAY When we make a call in messenger, we use the Internet. When we transmit or send a text or make a call, we use cellular networks. When we run out of load or battery, we use telephone, which use a telephone network. Having a unified way to communicate is one of the goals of ICT. ICT has saved companies a lot of resources (time and money) with the kind of communication technology they use, nowadays, in terms of economics. In a similar way, we spend less because of ICT. As it normally costs us a peso to send a text message or SMS, with the internet, we can send numerous messages and only be charged by a fraction. The combination of hardware equipment, precise software, GUI and effective communications network is the present composition of the ICT network. 4 What is It WORLD WIDE WEB The World Wide Web or WWW is the system that enables you to access hypertext documents and other files over the internet. The technology was proposed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. EVOLUTION OF WEB: WEB 1.0 When the World Wide Web was developed, most web pages were static. Static (also known as flat page or stationary page) in the sense that the page is “as is” and cannot be control by the user. The content is also the same for all users. WEB 2.0 Web 2.0 is the upgraded version of Web 1.0 by adding dynamic web pages. Web 2.0 allows users to interact with the page: rather just reading a page, the user may be able to comment or create a user account Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, and web applications. KEY FEATURES OF WEB 2.0 FOLKSONOMY It grant users to categorize and classify/arrange information using freely chosen keywords (e.g., tagging). RICH USER INTERFACE Content is active and is responsive to user’s input LONG TAIL Services are render on demand rather than on a one-time purchase. USER PARTICIPATION The owner of the website (author) is not the only one who is able to put content SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE Users/ clients will subscribe to a software only when needed rather than purchasing them MASS PARTICIPATION It is a diverse information sharing through universal web access. 5 WEB 3.0 The goal of Web 3.0 is to have machines (or servers) understand the user’s preferences to be able to provide web content specifically targeting the user in fast manner. The W3C standard encourages web developers to include semantic content in their web pages. The Semantic Web is a movement led by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). PROBLEMS OF WEB 3.0 COMPATIBILITY Web 3.0 could not support HTML files and current web browsers. SECURITY The security of the user is also in question since the machine is saving his or her preferences VASTNESS The World Wide Web already has billions of web pages. VAGUENESS Certain words are unspecific. The words “old” and “small” would depend on the user. LOGIC There are certain limitations for a computer to be able to predict what the user is referring to at a given time, since machines use logic. What is It TRENDS IN ICT 1.
