Steered by Excellence Introduction to MARPOL What is MARPOL? MARPOL stands for the Marine Pollution Convention, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1973. Main objective: To minimize pollution of the seas, including dumping, oil and air pollution from ships. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Structure of MARPOL Annexes of MARPOL Annex I: Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil. Annex II: Control of Pollution by Noxious Liquid Substances in Bulk. Annex III: Prevention of Pollution by Harmful Substances Carried by Sea in Packaged Form. Annex IV: Pollution by Sewage from Ships. Annex V: Pollution by Garbage from Ships. Annex VI: Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships (amended to include greenhouse gas emissions). Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Latest Edition Updates New Amendments Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Annex VI): Stricter measures to reduce GHG emissions from ships. Ballast Water Management: Stricter regulations on ballast water discharge standards. Plastic Waste Restrictions: Expansion of prohibitions on plastic waste discharge from ships. Sulfur Cap: Enforcement of the global 0.5% sulfur limit on marine fuel. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Recent and upcoming new requirements MARPOL Annex I - Regulations 15.3, 15.5 and 34.3 to.5 - entering into force on 1 January 2025: IMO Resolution MEPC.381(80) introduces a new Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Special Areas relating to restrictions on discharge of oil. Ships operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden need to comply from 1 January 2025. Compliance on a voluntary basis is encouraged before that date. Propelled by Passion ! The Garbage Record Book, whether as a part of the ship's official logbook, or as an approved electronic record book, or otherwise, shall be in the form specified in appendix II of MARPOL Annex V. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Key Changes in Annex VI (Air Pollution) Decarbonization Goals IMO's goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Introduction of Carbon Intensity Reduction Regulations. EEXI and CII: Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) regulations. Ships rated based on carbon intensity, requiring operational changes to maintain compliance. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Impact on Marine Industry Operational Challenges Shipowners need to retrofit existing vessels for compliance. Higher costs for cleaner fuels (low-sulfur fuel and alternative energy). Technological Innovations Increased use of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and hydrogen as alternative fuels. Development of energy-efficient designs and propulsion technologies. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Compliance and Enforcement Compliance Mechanisms Flag states and port state control inspections. Certificates required for vessels, such as the International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) Certificate. Penalties for Non-compliance Fines, detention of ships, or suspension of licenses. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Future Outlook Sustainability in Shipping Growing focus on zero-emission vessels (ZEVs). IMO's continued efforts to update MARPOL to reflect new environmental challenges. Collaboration Importance of collaboration between governments, shipping companies, and technology providers. Propelled by Passion ! Steered by Excellence Conclusion Summary MARPOL's latest edition introduces critical updates to address climate change and marine pollution. Adapting to these regulations will drive innovation in the shipping industry. Compliance is essential for sustainable shipping and protecting the marine environment. Propelled by Passion !
