## Elements and Principles of Contemporary Art ### Forms - **Elements of Art:** Building blocks of an artwork, tools artist used in creating an artwork - **Line:** is most easily defined as a mark that spans a distance between two points (or the path of a moving point), taking any form along the way - **Form:** maybe created forming of two or more shapes or asthreedimensional shape (cube, pyramid, sphere, etc.). It maybe enhanced by tone, texture and colour. - **Texture:** is the quality of a surface or the way any work of art is represented. Lines and shading can be used to create different textures as well. - **Shape:** pertains to the use of areas in two dimensional space that can be defined by edges, setting one flat specific space apart from another. - **Space:** is the area provided for a particular purpose. It may have two dimensions (length and width), such as floor, or it may have three dimensions (length, width, and height). - **Positive space:** refers to the space of a shape representing the subject matter. - **Negative space:** refers to the space around and between the subject matter - **Color:** pertains to the use of hue in artwork and design. - **Value:** or tone, refers to the use of light and dark, shade and highlight, in an artwork. ### Principles of Arts - **Contrast:** refers to the arrangement of opposite elements and effects - **Emphasis:** refers to the area of an artwork that dominates attention or draws interest - **Movement:** can be thought of in two ways - the first refers to how an artist depicts (draw or illustrate) movement using the elements and principles of art. - **Rhythm:** is a principle of art that refers to the movement or action of a composition, usually achieved through repetition of lines, shapes, colors, and more. - **Proportion:** is the size relationship between the various parts of an artwork - **Balance:** refers to the distribution of visual weight in a composition - **Unity:** also known as harmony, refers to the cohesiveness of an artwork-how whole consistent, and complete it appears - **Variety:** refers to the elements of a composition that differ from one another ## Significance of Arts Forms from the Regions - **Art:** is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as sculpture and painting - According to **Joan Brown**: - Art reflects the culture of the time. - It also servers as a mirror of society and life. - It captures the essence and importance of things that exist in a society. - Art is very important for any group of people as it players an important role in - **Bul-uls:** are carved statues or anitos figures of the Ifugaos - **Hagabi:** long wooden bench made of Narra or Ipil placed under the eaves in the stone-paved yard that surrounds the house. - **Sarimanok:** is also known as **papanok**.
