SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI COLLEGE SAINT ANTHONY SCHOOL SCIENCE 1O UNIT I PLATE TECTONICS Lesson 2: Earth’s Mechanism of Plate Tectonics Academics. And beyond. LEARNING OBJECTIVE: C2: Demonstrate convection current. C3: Describe the possible causes of plate movement. Earth’s Mechanism of Plate Tectonics MECHANISM OF PLATE TECTONICS Academics. And beyond. Earth’s Mechanism of Plate Tectonics ▪ The theory of plate tectonics attributes various events such as earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain-building processes, and other related phenomena to the motion and interaction of the plates that compose Earth’s lithosphere. ▪ Satellites Laser Ranging (SLR) - measures the round-trip distance between an instrument on the ground and a reflective, massive, spherical satellite in low (500–1200 km altitude) orbit. ▪ Global Positioning System (GPS) - satellite constellation supporting highly accurate positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) measurements worldwide. Academics. And beyond. Earth’s Mechanism of Plate Tectonics ▪ Seismic tomography is a technique of inverting seismological data to retrieve a three-dimensional image of the anomalies in seismic wave velocity within the media they cross. ▪ Mantle Convection Theory - refers to the movement of the Earth's mantle due to thermal convection currents, which drive the motion of tectonic plates. ▪ Slab Pull Theory - the force exerted on a tectonic plate as it subducts into the mantle. Academics. And beyond. Mantle Convection Theory ▪ Proposed by Arthur Holmes in 1929. CONVECTION CURRENTS – the flow that transfer the heat within a fluid. Heating and cooling of the fluid, changes in the fluid’s density, and the force of gravity combine to set convection current in motion. CONVECTION CURRENTS IN EARTH – In the Earth’s Mantle, large amounts of heat are transferred by convection current. Heat from the core and the mantle itself causes convection currents in the mantle. Academics. And beyond. Mantle Convection Theory Academics. And beyond. Slab Pull Theory ▪ Slab pull is a force that results from denser oceanic plates sinking beneath less dense continental plates along convergent boundaries and subduction zones. The gravitation force of the sinking oceanic plate drags the rest of the oceanic plate along with the portion experiencing slab pull. ▪ The denser plate sinks back into the mantle under the influence of gravity. It pulls the rest of the plate along behind it. Academics. And beyond. ASSESSMENT What To Do, Page 33 Academics. And beyond. ANY QUESTION? Academics. And beyond.
