7 Elements of Art Lesson 1 – Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Region Objectives 1. Identify the elements of art. 2. Demonstrates understanding of lines, textures, shapes, space, value, form, and colors. 3. Creates an artwork of people in the province\ region on the spot sketching of plants, tress and building and geometric line design. ELEMENT 1 – LINE The main types of lines include horizontal, vertical, diagonal, short, long, curved, and zig- zag lines, which can be applied to form the fundamental structure of an artwork. Lines can also help create different effects and convey movement, rhythm, and emphasis. ELEMENT 2 – SHAPES ELEMENT 2 – SHAPES Shape can be:  Geometric shapes are perfect and regular.  Organic shapes are irregular and natural. ELEMENT 2 – SHAPES POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE Positive shapes represent solid objects Negative shapes show the surrounding space. ELEMENT 3 – FORM ELEMENT 3 – FORM ELEMENT 3 – FORM Form is described by any three- dimensional structure that contains a width, height, and depth, and ranges from cubic, spherical, pyramidal, or conical to geometric or organic. ELEMENT 3 – FORM | EXAMPLE ELEMENT 3 – FORM | EXAMPLE by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 ELEMENT 4 – SPACE Space is based on where and how the artist applies all the other elements of art on their work. Space allows artists to set the foreground, middle ground, or background for paintings. ELEMENT 4 – SPACE | When an object is drawn or painted on top OVERLAPPING of another object the viewer’s eye interprets this as one object being in front of another implying there must be a space between them. ELEMENT 4 – SPACE | OBJECTS HIGHER UP IN THE PICTURE PLANE WILL SEEM TO THE VIEWER’S EYE PLACEMENT TO BE FURTHER AWAY THAN OBJECTS PLACED LOW DOWN IN THE PICTURE FRAME. ELEMENT 4 – SPACE | The further away an object, the less detail DETAIL is visible to the viewer. By purposely reducing the amount of detail in an object it will appear further away that an object with greater detail. ELEMENT 5 – VALUE Value is the lightness and darkness of the object. Primary Colors Tertiary Colors Blue Red Red-orange Yellow Red-purple/violet Yellow-orange Secondary Colors Yellow-green Green Blue-green Orange Blue-purple/violet Purple ELEMENT 6 – COLOR Color itself has three elements: hue, value, and intensity. Colors can hold emotion. The meaning of an artwork can drastically change just by playing around with these elements. Hue is the name given to a color, such as yellow, green, red, orange, blue, or purple. It refers to the specific wavelength of a color. Value is a color’s lightness or darkness. Mixing white or black with a hue can change a color’s value in drastic or subtle ways. In color value, a tint is when a color is mixed with white ELEMENT 6 – COLOR | EXAMPLE ELEMENT 7 | TEXTURE Texture connects with the sense of touch. For artwork that cannot be touched, the artist uses texture to show how something looks like it would feel. ELEMENT 7 | TEXTURE Types of Texture Sense one can feel about the surface of an artistic 1. Real Texture piece. This is indeed the type of texture that can be felt by touching a work of art. Sculptures, relief paintings, and mixed media pieces possess this type of texture. Referred to as implied texture, is a two-dimensional illusion of texture in an artwork. While the painted or drawn surface is smooth, made of lines, colors, and 2. Implied Texture shading, an artist can render it to appear with texture. PERFORMANCE TASK 2 Directions: Create an art that can show the 7 elements of art.
