Identify various art forms in the Philippines. Describe the different elements of art and principles of design found in every work of art. Classify different art forms found in the Philippines. These elements are the building blocks used to create art. Identifying these elements will help us evaluate the composition of art and better understand the artists’ choices and content. On the other hand, principles of design combine various elements to create a better visual representation. It is the device that makes the images more visually appealing. When design principles are used together, the artist can create amazing artwork. 16 The Elements of Art Rainbow Colorful Art by Steve Johnson 17 Space In visual art, space pertains to emptiness, which may be positive space or negative space. Positive space refers to the part that is enclosed in a shape, while negative space refers to the opposite part that the shape is enclosing. Positive and Negative Space 18  Line In visual arts, line is a series of points that may have two characteristics: form (curved, dotted, or broken) direction (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) In other disciplines like theater, line pertains to the script. In dance, it is the routine of steps. Zigzag Line Various Types 19 Shape and Form Shape is formed by connecting both ends of a line. It is a two-dimensional figure with length and width. On the other hand, form is three- dimensional: it has the same dimensions as a shape except with added depth and therefore does not feel flat. Elementary Form 20  Color When light bounces off an object and reaches our eyes, we perceive color. Color may have lightness or darkness, or coolness or warmth. While in music, it is the mood or quality of the composition. Harmony In visual arts, it is the unity of the artwork, specifically in reference to the arrangement of its parts. While in music, it refers to the simultaneous sounding or playing of different notes to produce a sound. Variety It refers to diversity. This means adding multiple elements to break the artwork’s monotony and make it more interesting. 25 Movement Movement serves as one of the fundamental principles in dance and theater. In visual arts, an artwork has movement when it incorporates the passage of time, even in an illusory manner. Claude Monet (1840) 26 Rhythm It refers to the repetition of certain elements to produce a pattern. In visual arts, repeated design elements may create a certain flow and lead the viewer’s eyes. In music, this refers to the even distribution of notes. Balance It refers to the even distribution of elements. There are two types of balance in visual arts: a. Informal balance or asymmetrical – when the designs are not equally distributed b. Formal balance or symmetrical – when the weight of the designs is equally distributed 27 Emphasis and Subordination Emphasis is a principle that may refer to the greater impact given on a certain element. On the other hand, subordination serves as the opposite of emphasis as it refers to how certain elements supplement the emphasized elements in a design. 28 WORKING WITH VISUALS Instructions Form groups with five members each. Each group will be given 15 minutes to create visual art. The visual art must include at least three elements of the art. The art should be relevant to the group’s theme. Choose two representatives to discuss the visual art. 29 FAD ART Both elements of art and principles of design are important in art composition. These concepts bring life to the creation of art. Artists with an understanding of these concepts always produce impactful art and deliver effective messages to their audience. Some may not be as talented as others, but every talent can be developed.
