C O N T E M P O R A R Y PHILIPPINE Arts FROM THE REGIONS LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this chapter the learner is expected to: Ident if y the var ied def init ions of ar ts; Determine the character ist ics that makes ar t unique; Understand the elements of ar ts; and Different iate the different forms of ar ts. IMAGINE LIFE WITHOUT ART THE NATURE OF ART THE NATURE OF ART Ar t is a concept in which basically provides color and substance to our ever yday existence as humans. Ar t basically st imulates our senses and cognit ive abilit ies as it allows the expression of emot ions and the subject ive self. THE NATURE OF ART Ar t is a tangible manifestat ion and product of human act ivity that allows the expression of individuality through a set of skills THE NATURE OF ART Ar t is a means of communicat ing or convey ing insights and emot ions. This allows the development of a relat ionship through appreciat ion of the work of ar t. Forms, colors, shapes, lines, and movements transmit emot ions ART AS DEFINED IN VARIED WAYS ART ACCORDING TO PLATO Ar t is merely an imitat ion or a copy of reality ART ACCORDING TO PLATO He stated that true forms were created by God and they are all per fect and cannot be replicated ART ACCORDING TO LEO TOLSTOY Ar t is the product ion of objects or elements f rom the ex ternal environment that pleases the senses. ART ACCORDING TO LEO TOLSTOY Ar t unif ies men as they produce the same feelings and sent iments. ART ACCORDING TO EUGENE VERON Ar t is an ex ternal manifestat ion created and produced through lines, movements, sounds, colors, and emot ions. ART ACCORDING TO EUGENE VERON This def ines the subject ivity of ar t as an ex ternal manifestat ion of human feelings and thoughts. ART ACCORDING TO LEONARDO DA VINCI Ar t is “the Queen of all sciences communicat ing knowledge to all the generat ions of the world” E L E M E N T S OF ARTS I. FORMS This element includes shapes and perceived volume. To exemplif y, a three- dimensional (3D) ar t work has depth, w idth, and height. A t wo-dimensional work of ar t can produce an illusion through the use of shading and modeling techniques. II. LINES II. LINES Lines also termed as “strokes” in digital ar t work marks bet ween t wo points which is used for outline and implied lines in ar t work and design. II. LINES It has w idth called as ‘thickness’; it has direct ion as well as length. III. COLOR III. COLOR Hue or the term or t itle we we assign to colors. III. COLOR 2. Intensity is the vividness of the color. III. COLOR 3. Value means the lightness or darkness of the color. IV. SPACE Space include the foreground, m iddle ground, background and area bet ween the im ages or objects which m ay be negat ive or posit ive. ‘Spoliar ium ’ by Juan Luna It is posit ive when an area is occupied by an object or im age and it is negat ive when it covers the space bet ween, bet ween and w ithin the im age or object. V. TEXTURE V. TEXTURE Tex ture denotes the sm oothness, ruggedness of the im age or object. It m ay be ‘Real’ sim ilar to that when we touch a sculpture. Tex ture m ay also be ‘Im plied’ which is also ar t if ic ial as when we see a painted im age of pebble. There are actually t wo types of tex ture in ar t: The physical sur face of the paint ing or draw ing itself can have three dimensional proper t ies. The second type of tex ture is illusor y or visual tex ture, which is when the ar t ist uses var ious elements to create the illusion of tex ture. This could be done through the use of brushstrokes, colour or values. An exam ple of thick, three dim ensional sur face tex ture Ar t ists create this effect by layer ing thick paint that holds its shape, creat ing m arks and v isible brush strokes in thick paint or paint ing on a tex tured sur face. An example of thick, three dimensional sur face tex ture Exam ple of illusor y tex ture, in the tree leaves and grasses This could be done through the use of brushstrokes, color or values. An ar t ist m ight use a dr y-brush paint ing technique to create the look and feel of fur on an anim al. Or, they could use contrast ing colors to give the illusion of different tex tures in the sam e im age. Example of illusor y texture, in the tree leaves and grasses VI. SHAPE Shapes could be geometr ic, natural, irregular, rectangle, oval, octagon, etc. It is t wo-dimensional (2D) where a line crosses over that creates a shape. If the object has height, w idth, and depth then it is considered three- dimensional (3D) like objects in the real world. THE ELEMENTS OF ART ARTS IN ITS DIFFERENT FORMS Ar t is classif ied into several form s depending on how it is expressed. Its form s m ay var y f rom paint ing to theatre, photography, dance, literature, architecture, and f ilm s. VISUAL ARTS Ar t that appeals to the visual sense and may be constructed using varied mediums. It takes a permanent form and allows appreciation by viewing the physical form of the ar tist’s imagination and expression. “T h e Co n tra s t” by H R O c a m p o (1960s ) “Yo u n g Filip in a” by Fa bia n d e la Ro s a (1937s ) DRAWING Drawing is a creation of an image, diagram or a form using drawing tools such as pen, ink, brush, pencil, markers, charcoal crayons DRAWING It uses hatching, scribbling, stippling, and blending. It represents a creative idea through a sketch on a paper or sur face. Hatching Scribbling Stippling Blending PAINTING A creative expression using pigment or color on a sur face for aesthetic value. It can be naturalistic, photographic, representational, abstract, narrative and political. Naturalistic Painting Photographic Painting Representational Painting Narrative Painting Political Painting CERAMIC Ceramic may take the form of potter y, sculpture, and f igurines. It is basically the creation of objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials through the use of heat. PHOTOGRAPHY This may be inspired by people, objects, events, or the environment itself. Photography is an ar t where one produces images of varied objects through light and other forms of radiant energy. PHOTOGRAPHY Several effects can now be used to produce images that projects illusions through the use of more advanced camera features such as Retro photo effect, Lomo effect, Vintage photo effect, Comic book effect, etc. Retro photo effect Lomo photo effect Vintage photo effect Vintage photo effect ARCHITECTURE A creation of science with ar t purposive of designing structures. ‘Architecture’ is a Greek word which means ‘arkhitekton’ which means ‘master builder’ or ‘carpenter’ ARCHITECTURE It is the ar t inferring an implied or apparent plan of, a complex object or system. This may include urban planning and design, landscape architecture. SCULPTURE Sculpture uses car ving, modeling, from metals, ceramics, wood or stone. PERFORMING ARTS This form of ar t which may be purposive of enter taining its audience may include dance, theatre, music, mime, and opera. MUSIC An ar t form that involves the creat ive use of sound to express insights and emot ions. Its elements include rhy thm, pitch, harmony which creates a pattern or a composit ion together w ith a song and even the play ing of an accompany ing instrument.
