7 Elements of Art
- Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Region are being studied.

Objectives:
- Identify the elements of art
- Demonstrate understanding of lines, textures, shapes, space, value, form, creating artwork.
- Creating artwork based on sketching of plants, tress, buildings, and geometric line design.
Line
- The main types of lines include horizontal, vertical, diagonal, short, long, curved, and zigzag.
- Lines form the fundamental structure in artwork.
- Lines can convey movement, rhythm, and emphasis.
Shapes
- Two types of shapes:
- Geometric shapes are perfect and regular.
- Organic shapes are irregular and natural.
- Positive shapes represent solid objects.
- Negative shapes show the surrounding space.
Form
- Form is any three-dimensional structure with width, height, and depth.
- Ranges from cubic, spherical, pyramidal, or conical to geometric or organic forms.
- Examples of forms include: a cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid.
- Example artworks/buildings created by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935.
Space
- Space is determined by where and how other elements are applied in an artwork.
- Artists use it to create foreground, middle ground, or background in paintings.
- Overlapping: When one object is drawn over another, it gives the illusion of one being in front of the other, creating space.
- Placement: Higher objects seem farther away than those placed lower in the picture.
- Detail: Objects further away have less detail, making them seem more distant.
Value
- Value refers to the lightness and darkness of the object.
- A gradient of values can be used to create depth and dimension.
Color
- Color has elements of hue, value, and intensity.
- Colors hold emotion and meaning which can be drastically changed by playing around with different elements, such as by adding tint.
- Hue: The name of a color (yellow, green, red, orange, blue, purple).
- Value: Lightness or darkness of a color.
- Intensity: The brightness or dullness of a color.
- Primary colors are red, yellow, and blue.
- Secondary colors are orange, green, and purple.
- Tertiary colors are combinations of primary and secondary colors.
Texture
- Texture refers to the surface quality, real or implied, that can be sensed through touch.
- Artists use texture in images/artworks that can't be touched to show the feeling that it might have.
- Real Texture: Sensable via touch.
- Implied Texture: Creates an illusion of texture, or evokes a texture not present. Art can appear rough, smooth, or patterned.
