A.Y. 2024-2025 Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions Lesson 1: Arts and Its Various Forms ART Art is “ar” in Aryan, which means, “to join or put together” It is “artizein” in Greek, meaning “to prepare” It is “ars” or “artis” in Latin, which means “ability or skill” “Arts is the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can S be shared with others. (Britannica Online, 2017) “Arts is the human ability to make things of beauty and things that stir us” (Atkins & Snyder, 2017) SH “It is the result of man’s manipulation of talents and materials” (Thesaurus, 2001) “Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory, or performing artifacts, expressing the author’s imaginative, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power (Oxford, and Merriam-Webster dictionaries) It can also be defined as expression or application of human creative skill and imagination in any form. TWO ELEMENTS OF AN ARTWORK s The subject and the medium are two important elements of an artwork that allows a person to experience life, the world, and its beauty. li Subject - the topic or idea present in the art Medium - the means to create the art (materials/ tools used) de Fi H IT FORMS OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS Picture This is a two- dimensional image of various subjects ranging from real-life images to the visually abstract. It may be created using different media such as chalk, charcoal, graphite, ink, oil, paint, watercolor, etc. FA A picture consists of lines and shapes which are drawn, painted, or printed on a surface and show a person, thing, or scene. (Collins English Dictionary) Sculpture It came from the Latin word “sculpere”, meaning “to carve”; This is a three-dimensional artwork that may be created using stone, marble, wood, and concrete. This may be produced by carving. Architecture These are structures intended for shelter. The art of architecture relies on the design and purpose of the structure. It is the art of planning, designing, and constructing buildings. Literature This is the art form of language through the combined use of words, creating meaning and experience. Poetry - refers to the type of literature that expresses one’s emotions or ideas using figurative or symbolic language, usually written in a group of lines or stanzas. Hofernandez CPAR Subject Teacher Prose - uses sentences and paragraphs, and sounds like ordinary speech/writing used to inform and persuade the readers. ❖ Baybayin (Pre-Colonial Filipino Writing System) Baybayin is an ancient script of the Philippines, believed to have been used as early as the 16th century. It is a syllabic script, which means each character stands for a syllable and is made up of a combination of basic shapes. It was used to write Tagalog, the language of the Tagalog people, but also other languages of the Philippines such as Pampango and Ilocano. Baybayin is a pre-Spanish script, which means it predates the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. It is thought to have been derived from the ancient script of India and is related to other Southeast Asian. S SH s li de Music This is an art form that appeals to the sense of hearing; is composed by combining notes into harmony. The pattern of sounds produced by people singing or playing instruments. (Collins English Dictionary) Fi Ethnic Traditional Music ➔ A ballad is a narrative folk song that tells all kinds of stories about events happening in a community. It includes histories, legends, fairy tales, animal fables, tales of outlaws and even star-crossed lovers. (e.g. Magtanim ay ‘Di Biro) ➔ Chant is a song with an unaccompanied melody and variable rhythm. ➔ Song Debate is sung by male and female singers who try to beat each other about a certain topic. European-Influenced Religious and Secular Music H ➔ Liturgical Music is a vocal and instrumental composition used in official rites of the Christian churches. (e.g. Lamb of God, Glory to God) IT ➔ Kumintang is a love dance accompanied by a guitar and a string bass, characterized by graceful hand and wrist movements popularly known as “kunday”. ➔ Pasyon is the chanting of a narrative poem about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in various styles. American-Inspired Music FA ➔ Classical Music refers to musical traditions of the West that were founded on the refinement of Western folk music or popular music traditions. (e.g. "Für Elise" by Ludwig Van Beethoven) ➔ Popular Music includes original music composed by Filipinos, which utilizes Western and local musical flavors. (e.g. Kathang Isip by Ben&Ben) Dance This is the art of the human form. The body is used, mobilized, and choreographed in a specific time, form, and space. Dance comes in various forms and styles. The art of making dances is called choreography while the person who practices this art is a choreographer. Folk Dance is a dance developed by people to reflect the life of a certain region or country. This is a dance that expresses the vernacular or historical culture of a group of people. (Ceremonial dance, combative, courtship, exorcism, funeral, game, torture, comic and religious dances). (e.g. Maglalatik, Tinikling) Hofernandez CPAR Subject Teacher Ballet is a theatrical dance performed on stage with the use of costumes, music, scenic design, and lighting. Modern Dance is a dance form that emerged during the 20th century that makes use of dance styles such as folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing, and sometimes theatrical in nature like ballet.(e.g. hip hop, freestyle) Theater This is the art form of performance. Dramatic texts are portrayed on stage by actors and actresses and are enhanced by props, lights, and sounds. It is an art form that involves live performers, to present the experience of a real or imagined event in front of an audience, usually in a particular place, often a stage. The performers make use of carefully planned actions or gestures, and speech combined with a song or a piece of music to convey emotions. Dulang Pahiyang is a theater that is not viewed as a separate activity, but as part of life. ➔ Rituals are characterized as a way to communicate with the Gods or spirits, which S involves a shaman, usually a babaylan or an albularyo, who calls the spirit and is being possessed by that spirit. SH ➔ Duplo is a poetic joust in speaking and reasoning, in which Balagtasan was derived from. ➔ Bayok – is a Maranao mimetic joust, whose theme is reliant on the occasion when the joust is being performed. ➔ Balitaw – is a poetic debate between a man and a woman Dulambayan or the People’s Theater is considered as the “theater in the context of social movements.” ➔ Drama Simboliko is the allegorical nationalist drama, which began during the American regime and was revived later on during the Marcos regime. s ➔ Street Theater is presented outside the theater building and without a stage area. ➔ Teatrong Pansimbahan is focused on spirituality and is usually performed based on the li events implemented by the Church. ➔ Theater as Arts is founded on Western models, where theater is viewed as a profession. Film This art form is a technological translation of theater. In films, special effects are utilized to enhance the de storytelling. A film also known as a movie, motion picture or moving picture. It is a work of visual art used to communicate ideas, feelings, experiences using moving images that are shown on television and in cinema. Action emphasizes conflict based on real-life stories or actual experiences of persons, and based from the tradition of metrical romance or literary comedy. Fi Animation is a film that involves the creation of illustrations or inanimate images and bringing them to life. Bomba is a film that depicts nudity and sex but is different from X-rated pornography. Dokyu is a motion picture that narrates news events or explanations on a specific subject matter based on facts (documentary). Drama is a motion picture that dwells on personal problems and conflicts that portrays sentiments and emotion. Fantasy is characterized by scenes from the imaginary world. H Historical depicts actual events from the past. Horror is a film that brings fear to the audience. IT Komedi (Comedy) aims to bring laughter to the audience. WHY DO ARTISTS CREATE ART?
