Communication Process of sharing and conveying messages or information from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and cultures (McCornack, 2014) Communication the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else (http://www.merriam-webster.com) Communication the exchange of information and the expression of feeling that can result in understanding (http://dictionary.cambridge.org) ❑ There is a wide variety of contexts and situations in which communication can be manifested; it can be a face-to- face interaction, a phone conversation, a group discussion, a meeting or interview, a letter correspondence, a class recitation, and many others. NATURE OF COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION connects people and the world they live in. Through communication, people can express their thoughts and ideas or convey information and messages through word of mouth, gestures and signals, and others. NATURE OF COMMUNICATION 1.Communication is a process. 2.Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver). 3.Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words, actions (nonverbal) or both spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time. 1. Communication as a process means it is a step-by-step activity and it is essentially a two-way process that involves the active participation of both the sender and receiver. 2. Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver). In other words, it is a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants do not exchange (encode-decode) information, news, ideas and feelings but also create and share meaning. 3. Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words, actions (nonverbal) or both spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time. Communication is not all about sending or receiving facts in words. It does involve ideas and emotions that are expressed through signs, symbols, and gestures. TYPES OF MESSAGES/ COMMUNICATION MODES ❑Communication modes are defined as the ways by which communication can be expressed.
