Chi Li Slays the Serpent Chi li slays the serpent The Chi Li and the Serpent was originated from China, specifically the ancient Chinese Kingdom of Yueh in a country called Chiang Lo. It is a story about a young girl named Chi Li who takes on a courageous act of volunteering as the annual year’s sacrifice to the young serpent in hopes that her family would gain food in exchange for act. It kept the local people in a state of constant terror and had already killed many commandants and magistrates from the city and nearby towns. Offerings of oxen and sheep didn't appease the monster, instead it demanded young girls of twelve to feast on. Chi Li Volunteers One day in the eight month of every year, they would deliver a girl to the monster's cave. This continued for nine years until nine girls had been devoured. In the tenth year the officials had again begun to look for a girl to hold in readiness for the appointed time. One year, Chi Li, a brave young girl from Chiang Lo country steps forward and volunteers to be the next sacrifice, despite the danger. Her parents refuse to allow it since they love her too much thus, she went in secret. Preparation Chi Li asked for a sharp sword and a snake- hunting dog. When the appointed day of the eight month arrived, she seated herself in the temple, clutching the sword and leading the dog. She then put pecks of rice balls in the mouth of the serpent's cave. Confrontation Chi Li approaches the serpent’s lair and feeds it the honey-soaked rice balls. Smelling the fragrance of the rice balls The serpent opened its mouth to eat them, distracted and weakened by the food, the monster was caught off guard. Slaying the Serpent Seizing the opportunity, Chi Li strikes and kills the serpent with her sword from behind , saving herself and freeing the village from its curse. Chi Li went into the serpent's cave and recover the skulls of the nine victims. The Village Rejoices When the king of Yueh learn these events he made Chi Li as his queen and appointed his father as magistrate of Chiang lo county. Her mother and sisters were also given riches. The villagers celebrate Chi Li’s victory, as the serpent’s reign of terror is finally ended. The story of Chi Li highlights themes of bravery, female empowerment, and the triumph of good over evil. Her character is celebrated in the story for her courageous act, intellect, and willingness to defy fear in order to save her village from destruction.
