Unit 2 Part 1 Review: Physical Geography Test Structure Part A: Multiple Choice (10 marks – knowledge) Part B: Matching (10 marks – thinking) Part C: Short Answer Questions (5 marks – communication) Part D: Types of Plate Movement (5 marks – application) Materials needed: pencil, pen, hi-lighter, eraser, correction fluid/tape, ruler and calculator. 1. Content Review o The spheres of the Earth - atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and cryosphere o Geologic history (Pangaea, Earth’s major tectonic plates, types of plate movement, subduction, Continental Drift Theory). o Landform processes - forces of mountain building (folding, faulting, volcanism) vs forces of erosion (weathering, erosion, deposition). o Recognizing landforms - mountains, hills, plains, valleys etc. o The rock cycle - magma, igneous rock, sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock. The three families of rock; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. What can the various rocks be used for? What type of rock is the strongest and why? o Natural Vegetation regions of Canada (map - which region is Toronto in? – which region is best for agriculture? – what is the newest region for diamond mining?). o Earthquakes (surface and body waves, Richter scale, seismograph, seismogram, modified Mercalli scale), volcanoes (intra-volcanism, hotspots, plumes) and tropical storms (hurricanes, category 1-5, global warming and possible effects). o Natural disasters - basic definition and effects (will be covered in class on Thursday – very short note). 2. Skills Review o Landform processes – knowledge of the plate movements Test Date: Tuesday November 12th, 2024
