Simply means that, a person must first lead himself before he can lead others. - He must possess the ability to consciously influence his own thoughts and behavior in order to achieve his personal goals or the objectives of the organization he is leading. - When he has foresight, makes the right decisions and choices on his own, and exhibits dedication towards achieving his goals then has self-leadership skills. - Aside from goal setting, self-awareness is another factor that helps make people great self-leaders. - conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires. The image shows a diagram relating self-awareness, self-leadership, self-regulation and self-motivation using the following text. - Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards. - Self-regulation can involves controlling one's behavior, emotions, and thoughts in the pursuit of long-term goals. - Self motivation is the ability to drive oneself to take initiative and action to pursue goals and complete tasks. ### Significance of Self-Leadership Self-leadership is the first stage or level of leadership. For employees, whether managers or ordinary subordinates, self-leadership is of great importance. 1. For leaders or superior officers, who receives very little or no supervision, self - leadership enable them to plan and set objectives on their own, as well as influence their own self to follow those plans. 2. For lower level employee or subordinates, who cannot all the time be sure the kind of governance or leader they will meet in the course of their career, self- leadership enable them to make themselves effective and efficient workers despite whatever leadership they may come across, whether laissez faire, free-reign, democratic or autocratic. 3. Self-leadership helps make the individual proactive, disciplined, and an independent decision maker. People who have no strong sense of self-leadership tend to feel they are not in control of themselves, often lack focus and get overwhelmed easily. Thus, the success of the achievement of organizational goals is dependent on the self-leadership of both superiors and the subordinates. ### Development of Self-Leadership Everyone is a potential leader. Therefore, leadership is not an inborn **trait** but it is developed through learning and training person with sincere interest to become a leader. 1. Clarity of Purpose * This means that every person must have a vision and capable of setting it. Being your own leader, your purpose or vision will be the foundation upon which you will build self-leadership. Without properly arranged objectives or purpose for your life, you will be at risk, trying to follow people's plans or ideas for your life and you end up stuck in the middle of nowhere. 2. Aim at Success and Take Reasonable Risks * Risk taking is an essential aspect of life. Challenge yourself to take on courageous tasks. Don't discourage yourself with past failures of yourself or others instead focus on success. However, they should be reasonably calculated risks that are relevant to your purpose. 3. Spend Time to Reflect on Your Life * Reflections can also mean allowing someone to make an objective assessment of you. While you remain the active doer of the things you do, you may see things from your perspective only. Take some time off to reflect on your life. Compare the past to the present and the present to future goals. Until you take a break to analyze yourself, you may never identify certain minorflaws. 4. Don't Tolerate Just Anything * You cannot put your vision at risk. You should learn to be intolerant of any suggestion or ideas which are not in line with your vision. This intolerance is not towards others only but you too. It includes not tolerating negative aspects of your nature such as laziness, fear, and many others. ### Influence or Influenced? "Your job gives you authority. Your behavior earns you respect" Irwin Federman * If you are influencing and providing direction and guidance to others, then you are leading. Most of us may just think that leaders are those people born with special skills or talents or the right circumstances. However, that's not always the case the truth is, everyone are prospective leader. What make a person to be a good leader are not just his skills and talents, but primarily his character and attitude. Leader must influence and should be influenced. Everyone can influence somebody either for the good or for bad. A person should have followers for him to be called a leader. He must lead others towards something that will bring goodness and not harm. It only takes skill, wisdom and compassion for a person to harness influence just as a good leader should. * However, when a person refuses to use this influence at all and does not take a personal stand on things, he or she can easily be persuaded and most probably, the person would end up as the one being influenced. It seems like there are only two choices when comes to this- to be the influencer or to the one influenced. The images shows a document split into a 3x1 layout of three ways to influence: - Logical appeals - Emotional appeals - Cooperative appeals The image is of a star diagram named Three Secrets to Influential Leadership made up of with the steps: - Know the people you work with, - Ask Questions and Listen for Answers - Seek and Accept Feedback Leading to Respect and finally Influence.
