Example Chat with your friend using Skype and downloading a movie, while preparing the question for BDS 1st semester students ( using more than three programs ) MULTI USERS MULTITASKING Allows several users to access the same data simultaneously. Normally run on large computers such as in a Hospital or educational system. Example Accessing the Lab work from a sever to all the computers. Web server, mail, chat rooms, news groups. POST POST (power on self test) is booting the computer to start Windows in either of two boot modes Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) or BIOS (Basic Input output System). UEFI and BIOS are different types of firmware interface that is, small, low-level software programs or instruction sets in nonvolatile memory incorporated in PCs during the manufacturing process. 6 GENERAL FEATURES OF WINDOW GUI (GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE) Windows, Macintosh OS, and mobile devices use GUIs as the means for the user to interact with the OS Your desktop may display all or a few of the items shown in next figure 7 8 ICONS Icons or small pictures represent applications, folders, and files. By default, one icon is titled the Recycle Bin, which is located on the desktop. 9 SHORTCUTS Shortcuts are pointers to an actual application, folder, or file. They contain the path to the executable file for the application, to the folder, or to the file, respectively. 10 TASKBAR Press Start button or to open the menu +X is used to open the Mini Utility Quick Access menu 11 12 NOTIFICATION AND SYSTEM TRAY 13 DESKTOP APPEARANCE Lock screen Star full screen Taskbar automatic and location 14 MANAGE DESKTOP ICON 15 MANAGING WINDOWS 16 CONTROLLING THE WINDOW SIZE AND PLACEMENT Maximize button expands the window to fill the screen Minimize button places the icon for the application on the taskbar Restore button returns the window to the size it was before it was maximized 17 18 FOLDER AND FILE MANAGEMENT Creating Files and Folder Viewing Files and Folder Copying Files and Folder Moving Folders and Files Deleting Folders and Files Storing Files and Folder on Drive Compressing Files and Folders Sharing Files and Folders 19 ERROR CHECKING This utility checks the file system for errors and bad sectors on the disk. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are all very similar in their basic functionality and appearance. 4 COMMON FUNCTION IN OFFICE 5 COMMON LAYOUT Microsoft Office 2019/365 improves on previous Office versions such as Office 2007 to 2016. Backstage view of some MS Office applications like Word, Excel and Power Point matches to each other. 6 7 TITLEBAR Title appears at the top of the window Common Quick access toolbar (QAT) and Title Bar 8 RIBBON The ribbon is composed of task-oriented tabs, groups, and commands. There are some commonly used commands associated with a certain task. 9 TABS, GROUPS, AND COMMANDS Basic task-oriented tabs appear across the top of the ribbon. Most applications share the following tabs: File, Home, Insert, Review, and View. It vary among applications. Subsections of tabs are called Groups 10 11 DIALOG BOX LAUNCHER WITH DIALOG BOX 12 HELP On the ribbon, at the end of the tabs, a lightbulb or magnifying glass can be found. These icons indicates where the Help text box is located. This Help dialog box is found in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 13 HELP TEXT BOX 14 OFFICE 365 Launched in 2001 Office 365 is a cloud-based, subscription model version of Microsoft’s It contains the same core applications as traditional versions of Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and other Publisher, Planner, OneDrive, Exchange, SharePoint, Access, Skype and Microsoft Teams There are also online- and mobile-only versions of Office, known as Office Online, through which users can get access to feature-limited versions of Office apps for free 15 OFFICE 365 COMMON TASKS FOR IPHONE AND IPAD The common tasks to view and edit within the applications on iPhones and iPads depend on the particular Office plan. Qualifying plans such as Office 365 Personal, University, or Business Essentials permit editing. Non-qualifying plans such as one-time purchases or Office Home and Student do not. Most common tasks like printing, saving, formatting, editing, seeking help, and spellcheck, are accessible through the apps. 16 KEYBOARD COMMANDS USING SHORTCUT KEYS Office applications allow several ways of using the keyboard keys to take shortcuts in performing certain commands such as copy, delete, or print. Shortcuts can be taken when the Alt (alternate) key or the Ctrl (control) key is clicked along with another predetermined key(s). 17 KEYBOARD COMMANDS AND SHORTCUT KEYS 18 KEYBOARD COMMANDS AND SHORTCUT KEYS 19 KEYBOARD COMMANDS AND SHORTCUT KEYS 20 ⚫ SoftwareApplications Common Tasks ⚫ Chapter 4 “Introduction to Computers for Healthcare Professionals by Jones & Bartlett Learning (2020)” 21 Thank You Question ? 22 RAK College of Medical Sciences RAK Medical and Health Sciences University 2024-2025 Information Technology and Innovation (ITI-2031) Omar al Jadaan 159 [email protected] RECAP Operating System Software application common task 2 TODAY’S TOPIC THE INTERNET (PART-I) 3 LEARNING OUTCOME Describe the Internet and define related Internet terms. Software needed to connect to the Internet. 4 THE INTERNET Internet can be described as network of networks. Almost any type of information can be found on this network. Using the internet data can be rapidly transferred around the world. FUNDING STRUCTURE No one source foots the bill for the Internet; everyone pays for own part. For example: Colleges and universities pay for their connections to some regional network. This network, in turn, pays a national provider for access. Many institutions and companies donate their computer resources in the form of servers and computer technicians to hold up some part of the Internet. Some companies own and operate components of the Internet in the form of communication lines and related switching equipment. The main lines that carry the bulk of the traffic are collectively known as the Internet backbone and network service providers (NSPs) maintain the backbone. 6 PROTOCOLS Operating systems, requires a means for computers to “talk” to each other. For the Internet, this base protocol (set of rules) is called Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Every computer on the Internet must use and understand this protocol for sending and receiving data. TCP/IP uses a “packet-switched network” that minimizes the chance that data will be lost when it sends the packets over the transmission medium. 7 WORLD WIDE WEB www is part of the internet where graphics, sound video and animation are used. Browser software is needed to take full advantage of www. The most popular www software browsers are Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. These software browsers must be installed on your computers to access the www. WELL KNOWN WEB BROWSERS Safari Firefox Google Chrome Internet Explorer Microsoft Edge Opera Mozilla navigator Netscape navigator Netscape communicator 9 WEBSERVERS Web servers are computers that hold information users request. Web servers recognize the requests, process them, and then make them available to the end user. 10 HYPERTEXT Hypertext is text with links that provides additional information to the user either in that document or other documents or the Internet. For example, a hypertext term might open a window with the definition of that term. 11 HYPERTEXT… Hypertext markup language (HTML) is the tagging system used to code (i.e., build) webpage files so that a browser can display them regardless of the user’s computer or mobile device. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is the communications protocol for accessing and working with the World Wide Web. A subset of this protocol is HTTPS, which means the site is a secure site. Do not confuse it with HTML, which is the tagging language of the web. 12 WEBSITES A website allows communication between organization and outside world. Some websites allow users to place electronic orders. This is called E-Commerce. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF E-COMMERCE Advantages of E-Commerce: Customers can place order using website of a business organization and goods are delivered to their location. No need to drive from long lines in the malls and stores. It reduces pollutions and accidents. Disadvantages of E-Commerce: Hackers access your credit card information and use it to steal your money Website hosts: when you make up your own website, it is stored on space allocated to you by website hosts servers such14 as godaddy, bluehost. INFORMATION RETRIEVAL It permits users to obtain files from other sites and download them to their own computers, a process commonly referred to as file transfer. Examples: -Telnet, which many librarians use to connect the remote computer -FTP, to download/upload web pages, files, and programs that are available on other services -Web, which we all use. Today, there is an increased use of streaming applications, which permit users to view videos and podcasts of educational materia1l5s and to interact with one another in real time. CLOUD STORAGE Cloud storage refers to delivery of hosted services over the Internet or a proprietary network. With the advent of mobile devices, many users store and access their data over the Internet with cloud storage service. Example: -Google Drive -One Drive -Dropbox 16 INTERNET SOFTWARE Like hardware, the software necessary to establish an Internet connection depends on the mode of access and the specific connection service provider. Internet front-end software, also called a browser, is the layer of software with which the user interacts. Examples include Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or a program the service provider offers. Example: -You might need Adobe Reader for viewing PDF files -Email programs such as Outlook or Mac Mail to access email INTERNET SOFTWARE… Internet back-end software is on the server side, which users do not see. This software stores and organizes data for you to view. There are also apps (short for applications), which are nimble programs for use within the browser. Example: Google Maps provides helpful maps and directions Plug-ins are additional pieces of software that process specific types of content. 18 E-MAIL E-mail is the method of sending messages from one terminal to another via a communication link. In order to send and receive an email you have to create your email address using free email services such as yahoo, hotmail, google. Once the e-mail address is created then you can send and receive mails. E-mail software: allows you to save, delete, receive or send messages in your E-mail address. ISPs provide address book, mailing lists and file attachments. ADVANTAGES OF E-MAILS Email is a free tool. Once you are online, there is no further expense that you need to spend on in order to send and receive messages. You can attach pictures and documents to your e-mail. No need to go to buy stamp and envelope to mail it. Email is accessible from anywhere – as long as you have an internet connection. Email allows for mass sending of messages. It is very cheep than letters. Green DISADVANTAGES OF E-MAIL Email lacks a personal touch. While some things are better off sent as written and typed messages, some things should be verbally relayed or written by hand in a note or letter. Email messages can contain viruses. It’s best to be aware of this possibility so that you are careful when opening messages from people you don’t know, or when downloading attachments. Not every one has equipments to send and receive e-mails Junk mail is problem Spam, Having to deal with spam and spoofs is one of the worst avoidable time wasters online. Use some anti spam software. ⚫ The Internet Part-I is from ⚫ Page (525-534) Chapter 9 of book “Introduction to Computers for Healthcare Professionals by Jones & Bartlett Learning (2020)” 22 Thank You Question ? 23 RAK College of Medical Sciences RAK Medical and Health Sciences University 2024-2025 Information Technology and Innovation (ITI-2031) Omar al Jadaan 182 [email protected] RECAP Internet Web services Web browsers Internet software 2 TODAY’S TOPIC THE INTERNET (PART-2) 3 LEARNING OUTCOME Manipulate browsers to explore the Internet. Explore the process to evaluate website designs 4 ACCESS PROVIDERS Access providers are organizations that provide access to an Internet host computer. They often supply the software necessary to connect to the Internet as well as the appropriate connection equipment. There are several types of access providers exist, users need to choose the type of access that is appropriate for them. 5 INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS ISPs provide access to the Internet and email. Many also provide special services such as TV, news, data storage, web hosting, and specialized databases. Examples Etisalat, Du, depending on your geographic location. 6 FREEINTERNET ACCESS Some community-based computer networks are designed to help local citizens access and share information and resources at no cost; others are free ISPs that make their money from paid sponsors or advertisers. Funding to support community based access generally is made available through local libraries, government agencies, or interested local businesses such as airports, bookstores, and malls. This type of service generally restricts use of the network to people who live in or are visiting the community. 7 USER IDS AND PASSWORDS Except for free Internet access options, you must have a user ID and a password to use the services of the ISP. You may choose the user ID or the institution may assign one using its naming standards. Example At some institutions, the user ID could be of the user’s last name, first name or ID number etc.; thus a user ID might be ABCXYZ or 123456. 8 INTERNET ADDRESSING Just as you must have a user ID to access many of the services on the Internet, your computer itself must have a unique address when connecting to the Internet. 9 IP ADDRESSES An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique identification number that distinguishes each computer or device connected to the Internet. The university or service provider assigns this specific string of numbers to the computer or device. To communicate effectively, no two computers can have the same number at the same time. 10 IP A computer may use a fixed (static) address or a dynamic address that changes each time the user accesses the Internet. The IP address uses a number from 0 to 255 for each part of its four-part number. Example This number may be 208.034.242.017 ipconfig is a command used to check the IP of a computer 11 DOMAIN NAMES A domain name is an address, similar to that used by the postal service, that points to a computer with a specific IP address. The name provides a description of a computer’s location on the Internet. Domain names create a single identity for a series of computers that a company uses. A special Domain Name System (DNS) computer looks up the name and matches it with its assigned IP address. Examples www.google.com www.rakmhsu.ac.ae 12 DOMAIN NAME SCHEME library.rakmhsu.ac.ae 13 COMMON TOP-LEVEL DOMAIN NAMES.aero Air transportation industry.biz Business.com Business or other commercial enterprises (most popular domain name).edu Educational institutions.gov Government agencies or departments.int International organizations.net Network service providers or resources (second most popular name).org Organizations, usually nonprofit or charitable (third most popular name).pro Professionals or other licensed people 14 All countries are having a different top level domain names e.g..ae URLS A URL (uniform resource locator) is an address of any resource connected to a webpage. URLs help a computer to locate a webpage’s exact location on the web server. URL Components 15 MAIN ELEMENTS OF A BROWSER Toolbar for Chrome 16 SETTING HOMEPAGE IN CHROME USING THE HISTORY LIST The history list keeps track of sites that you visited over the past several days and offers a convenient means of redisplaying those pages. 18 SAVE WEBPAGE IN CHROME 19 CREATING A SHORTCUT TO A WEBPAGE In Chrome, left-click the View site information icon to the left of the URL in Omnibox, and drag to the desktop. By clicking on the Customization and control Google Chrome icon, then More tools, then Create Shortcut. 20 CREATING A BOOKMARK OR FAVORITE Bookmarks or favorites save the URLs of frequently visited sites. By using this feature to help organize a list of webpages so that it can easily find them later. The basic functions necessary to use this feature are available on all browsers 21 COOKIES AND HISTORY FILES First-level cookie files are designed to enhance the online experience by recognizing the visitor when he or she returns to a website and recording what the visitor did at that site. On the other hand, third-level cookies can present security problems. A history file (list) keeps track of what sites you visit on the web. 22 DELETE HISTORY FILES HTML FILES The hypertext markup language (HTML) provides a mechanism for displaying text and graphics-based documents in web browsers. HTML5 code (the latest version of HTML code) consists of a series of embedded tags in the web document that tells the browser how to display the page. The tags for a simple webpage may look like the following example: Welcome to Healthcare Tips Online The purpose of this website is to provide the general public with several tips for working with healthcare providers. 24 ⚫ The Internet Part-II is from ⚫ Page (535-569) Chapter 9 of book “Introduction to Computers for Healthcare Professionals by Jones & Bartlett Learning (2020)” 25 Thank You Question ? 26 RAK College of Medical Sciences RAK Medical and Health Sciences University 2024-2025 Information Technology and Innovation (ITI-2031) Omar al Jadaan 208 [email protected] RECAP Internet IP Domain Name URL Browser’s element HTML files 2 TODAY’S TOPIC SOCIAL MEDIA 3 LEARNING OUTCOME Define basic terminologies related social media, explore the use of social media in the health professions 4 SOCIAL MEDIA Social media (SM) is a broad term referring to a variety of tools Apps Software Hardware and other technology used to interact with others in order to share information. 5 TOOLS OF SOCIAL MEDIA Aggregator An aggregator is a software application or program that collects information from online sources, such as blogs, podcasts, and websites, for the purpose of showing information in a single view. 6 BLOG A blog is a website or online journal containing dated material, usually in reverse chronological order.
