## Common Symptoms - Visual disturbances (such as blindness or double vision) - Weakness - Loss of coordination - Speech disturbances ## How a Synapse is Carried 1. An action potential reaches a synaptic knob. 2. The membrane depolarizes, and calcium ions enter the cell. 3. Calcium causes vesicles to fuse with the plasma membrane and release their store of a neurotransmitter into the synapse. 4. The neurotransmitter binds to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. 5. The specific neurotransmitter determines whether the impulse continues (called excitation) or whether it is stopped (called inhibition). 6. The receptor releases the neurotransmitter, after which it is reabsorbed by the synaptic knobs.
