His responsibilities included ordering the supplies, choosing the crew and sailing routes & navigating the ship during the voyage. He was also in charge of handling all paper work during the voyage. 2) What was the role of the ‘first mate’ on the ship? Ans: The first mate was the second most important person on the ship. His job was to receive orders from the master and give them to the crew. 3) List and explain the responsibilities of crew members on a ship.
