# Mometrix ## Hematopoietic Stem Cells Transplantation - The only curative treatment - Immunosuppressive drugs must be used - Success rates are only about 85% - Procedure is only used on those at high risk - Requires ablation of bone marrow - Places the child at increased risk ## Partial Chimerism - Uses a mixture of the donor and the recipient's bone marrow stem cells - Does not require ablation of bone marrow - Showing good success ## Anemia - Results in a decrease in oxygen transportation and decreased perfusion throughout the body - Causes the heart to compensate by increasing cardiac output - As the blood becomes less viscous, there is decreased peripheral resistance, so more blood is pumped to the heart - This increased flow can cause turbulence that results in a heart murmur and, if severe or prolonged, heart failure - Children can tolerate low oxygen levels better than adults, however, growth and sexual development may be delayed with chronic anemia - Symptoms include: - General malaise and weakness - Poor feeding/ anorexia - Pallor - Shortness of breath on exertion - Headache, dizziness - Apathy, depression, decreased attention span, slowed thought processes - Shock symptoms (with severe blood loss): Tachycardia, hypotension, poor peripheral circulation, and pallor ## Treatment - Identification and treatment of underlying cause - Blood or blood components as indicated - Supportive care: oxygen, intravenous fluids - Splenectomy (for hemolytic anemias) ## Iron Deficiency Anemia - The most common anemia during childhood, affecting 3% of infants, 6 to 18% of toddlers, and 9 to 11% of female adolescents.
