# Landforms of the Earth The continuous units of landmass on the Earth's surface are known as continents. Large bodies of water that surround the continents are known as oceans. There are 7 continents, in order of size, they are: 1. Asia 2. Africa 3. North America 4. South America 5. Antarctica 6. Europe 7. Australia & Oceania Twenty-nine percent of the Earth's surface is covered by continents. Two-third of all continental mass lies in the Northern Hemisphere. The large landmasses of the Northern Hemisphere are triangular in shape. North America, South America, Africa, the subcontinent of India and the Malay Peninsula are wide in the north and taper southwards. The arrangement of continents and oceans is such that where there is landmass in the Northern Hemisphere, there is ocean in the Southern Hemisphere. For example, the North Pole is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean while the South Pole is surrounded by the continent of Antarctica. ## Continents and Oceans of the World | Continent | Ocean | |---|---| | North America | North Pacific Ocean | | North America | North Atlantic Ocean | | South America | South Atlantic Ocean | | South America | South Pacific Ocean | | Africa | Indian Ocean | | Australia & Oceania | Pacific Ocean| | Antarctica | Southern Ocean| | Antarctica | Arctic Ocean|
