# The Russian Revolutions ## 4.3 Two Revolutions **The February Revolution** In 1914, WWI broke out. Germany and Austria-Hungary conquered large areas. Heavy losses and territory conquered, in addition to worsening living conditions, resulted in widespread protests in Russia in 1917. The Tsar lost support and had to step down.  The people questioned who should hold power. The Duma (parliament) was seen as the only legitimate voice. The Duma created a Provisional government. The goal was to establish a constitutional government. However, the Provisional Government struggled to assert control or to fix the crisis created by the war. **Semion Kanatsjikov and the Revolution** Workers at the Petrograd factories went on strike and demonstrated. Semion Kanatsjikov joined the protests, wanting greater worker rights. Later, he became involved in the Marxist political movement. After being arrested, he later helped organize protests. He aimed for the end of the war, better wages, and an 8-hour work day. **Lenin Returns to Russia** Lenin arrived in April 1917, and advocated overthrowing the Provisional Government. He argued the provisional government would not serve the people, and urged for immediate peace and a communist takeover. **Image Description:** The image shows a large crowd of people, likely demonstrators, in a public square. The photo is in black and white. Participants are protesting. Red banners are visible. The overall impression is one of a large political demonstration.
