## Water Pollution ### Check Point 1 1. Clean water that is fit for drinking is called **potable water**. 2. Sewage is treated in a **lake** or **river**. 3. Biogas is released during the treatment of **biogas** 4. **Chlorine** or **ozone** are used to disinfect water. ### Be an active citizen Jessica missed her van to school so she had to walk. During her walk, she noticed a street that was stinking and had open drains. She covered her nose with a handkerchief to avoid the foul smell. The drain was overflowing with dirty water, household waste, plastic bags, and used scraps of paper. Jessica saw children defecating in the open. She thought it was disgusting. Jessica decided to do something about the situation. She spoke to her teacher at school. The teacher advised Jessica to approach the municipality. Jessica and her friends approached the concerned authorities. Soon, the drains were covered and hygienic conditions prevailed in the street. We can all do our bit to avoid wastage and contamination of water. ### Ways to Control Water Pollution * **At home:** * Hazardous household products should be disposed of properly. Many household chemicals, like paints, motor oils, cleaning liquids, insecticides, should not be allowed to go down the drain as they are toxic. These are harmful to both humans and microbes that help in the purification of water. * Used oils and fats should not be thrown in the drain. Used oils and fats should not be poured into the sink. If allowed to go down the drain, they may choke the pipes. * Dispose of nonbiodegradable products safely. You should never flush nonbiodegradable products like plastic bags or diapers down the toilet because this can harm the sewage treatment process. * **In your lawns and gardens** * Use manure or compost fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers, as chemical fertilizers may reach the water bodies and cause harm. Using manure is better for retaining the soil's fertility. * Do not water your lawns excessively. If you water your lawn excessively, fertilizers will go into the water and reach the water bodies, causing water contamination. * **Public places** * Do not throw plastic material in rivers, lakes, or water bodies. You should dispose of any rubbish. * Dispose of waste carefully at fairs, weddings and other places that are busy or crowded. This is important because a lot of waste is generated at such events.
