## Endocrine glands and their functions ### Thyroid gland - Largest endocrine gland - Looks like a butterfly with its spread CH shaped lobes - Secretes a hormone called *Thyroaine* - Iodine is essential for the synthesis of *Thyroaine*. - Maintains the balance of water and electrolytes. ### Adrenal gland - Located at the anterior part of each kidney - Composed of two types of tissue, the peripheral and adrenal medulla - Secretes many hormones called *corticoids* (steroid hormones) - Maintains osmotic pressure and contributes to the regulation of electrolytes - Aldosterone regulates the balance of water and electrolytes. ### Pineal gland - Located on the dorsal surface of diencephalon - Secretes a hormone called *melatonin* - Plays an important role in regulating the rhythm of our body - Helps in maintaining normal sleep-wake cycles
