NAME: GRAPES Geography study guide There are two types of geography and how they both help us with understanding: *where things happen *why they happen Physical geography is about the characteristics including landforms and climate. Human geography is about the characteristics such as language, religion, governments, culture, and economies. When studying geography we can use the 5 Themes of Geography to help us understand geography better: 1. Place 2. Location 3. Region 4. Movement 5. Human Environment Interaction PLACE- We ask- what is it like there, what kind of place is it? We find the answer by looking at the…… Physical- Landforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil. Human- What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs. LOCATION- helps us answer where we are or we are. There are two types or ways of finding or telling a location: Absolute location- the exact location of a place on a map. Using latitude and longitude, or a street address or something very specific. Relative location- can be told by describing or by giving landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another. REGION- is the physical and human characteristics that distinguish one place from another. These help provide clues to understanding the nature of places on earth. MOVEMENT- Movement is the understanding of why people move from one location to another and how products, information and ideas move around the Earth- Diffusion Migration people move because of two kinds of reasons: Push factors- things that would want you to move away from the place you live. Pull factors - things that would want to make you move somewhere because you want to. HUMAN ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION- looks at the positive and negative effects that occur when people interact with their surroundings
