DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES POLI 448: ISSUES IN AFRICA’S INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS SECOND SEMESTER 2022/2023 ACADEMIC YEAR 1 THE ANTHROPOCENE 07/18/2024 2 THE ANTHROPOCENE Human activities have led to a significant increase in global temperatures, as well as changes in weather patterns, such as more frequent and severe natural disasters. Human activities have also led to significant losses in biodiversity, with many species facing extinction. Additionally, deforestation, pollution, and the degradation of natural resources are all significant issues associated 07/18/2024 3 THE ANTHROPOCENE The Anthropocene is a complex and multifaceted issue, and it is important to recognize the role that human activities play in shaping our environment The impact of the Anthropocene is not limited to the natural world, but also has social and economic implications. For example, climate change can lead to displacement, poverty, and conflict. 07/18/2024 4 THE ANTHROPOCENE The Anthropocene is a term used to describe the geological era marked by significant human impact on the Earth's natural systems. It is a way of understanding the ongoing and evolving effects of human activities on the planet. This includes; Climate change, Economic and geopolitical power shifts, Resource exploitation, Environmental degradation and Sustainable development. 07/18/2024 5 THE ANTHROPOCENE Africa, as a continent, is a part of this larger story and has been shaped by the Anthropocene in various ways, with important social, economic, and environmental implications. One of the most significant ways that the Anthropocene has been used to explain changes in Africa is environmental degradation. 07/18/2024 6 THE ANTHROPOCENE The continent has experienced widespread deforestation, soil erosion and loss of biodiversity, which can be understood as part of the broader global phenomenon of human- induced environmental change. Additionally, the Anthropocene has helped to explain the ongoing and evolving impacts of climate change on Africa. 07/18/2024 7 THE ANTHROPOCENE The continent is expected to experience more frequent and intense climate-related disasters, such as droughts, floods, and cyclones. This is a result of the ways in which human activities have altered the Earth's natural systems, leading to changes in the climate. Moreover, the Anthropocene has helped to explain the emergence of new economic and geopolitical power centres over time, which 07/18/2024 8 THE ANTHROPOCENE For example, the rise of China can be understood as part of the broader global shift in economic power towards Asia, which has affected the way that African countries interact with the rest of the world. However, it is important to recognize that the Anthropocene is not solely a negative phenomenon. 07/18/2024 9 THE ANTHROPOCENE Human activities have also led to significant advances in technology and science, as well as improvements in living standards for many people. It is important to find a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability. To address the challenges that Anthropocene espouses, it is necessary to promote sustainable development, which takes into 07/18/2024 10 REFERENCES Lewis, S. L., & Maslin, M. A. (2015).
