India's Cold Weather Season

High pressure develops on the land (Northern India) during winter, and offshore winds start blowing towards the areas of low pressure over the Sea (Bay of Bengal). The winds pick up moisture while passing over the Bay of Bengal and shed it on the Coromandel coast after striking the Eastern Ghats.

The Northern Plains are located far away from the moderating influence of the Sea, while the southern Peninsula is warmer since it lies closer to the equator and has the coastal areas' moderating effect of the Sea.

The temperature in the Gangetic plains is around 17.5°C, while in hilly areas, the night temperature falls below the freezing point.
