  • India is strategically located between Europe and East Asia, connected by the trans-Indian Ocean routes.
  • The Deccan Peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean, facilitating contact with West Asia, Africa, and Europe from the western coast and Southeast and East Asia from the eastern shore.

India's Neighbours

  • India shares a land boundary with seven countries: China (Tibet) in the north, Nepal and Bhutan in the northeast, Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest, Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east, and Sri Lanka and Maldives in the south.


  • India lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere, with its mainland extending between latitudes 8°4'N and 37°6'N and longitudes 68°7'E and 97°25'E.
  • The Tropic of Cancer (23° 30'N) divides the country into almost two equal parts.
