    Study Notes

Lower Limb: Muscles, Nerves & Vessels of the Leg

    • Musculi, nervi et vasa membri inferioris cruris.
    • Updated 2024.
    • Information includes muscles, nerves, and vessels of the leg.

    Lower Limb Muscles - Movement

    • Contractio musculorum trahit os et efficit motum.
    • Articulationes membri inferioris ostendunt gradum minorem motus quam brachium, sed hic invenitur articulatio maxima et maxime complexes in corpore – genu.
    • Motus:
      • Flexio – diminutio anguli articulationis.
      • Extensio – augmentatio anguli articulationis.
      • Abductio – motio a linea mediana recedens.
      • Adductio – motio ad lineam medianam accedens.
    • In membro inferiore, musculi perficientes flexionem (flexores) solent inveniri in aspectu posteriori.
    • Musculi perficientes extensionem (extensores) solent inveniri in aspectu anteriori.

    Gluteal Muscles

    • Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Medius, Gluteus Minimus, Piriformis, Quadratus Femoris, Superior Gemellus, Obturator Internus, Inferior Gemellus.

    Other Thigh Muscles

    • Vastus Lateralis, Sartorius, Gracilis, Vastus Medialis, Gastrocnemius (Medial Head), Calcaneal/Achilles Tendon, Iliotibial Tract/IT Band, Peroneus/Fibularis Longus, Extensor Digitorum Longus.

    Other Leg Muscles

    • Tibialis Anterior, Flexor Digitorum Longus, Extensor Digitorum Longus, Extensor Hallucis Longus,
    • Peroneus/Fibularis Brevis, Gastrocnemius (Lateral Head), Soleus

    Innervations

    • These are the nerves that supply sensation and control to certain muscles:
      • Gluteus Maximus: Inferior Gluteal nerve
      • Gluteus Medius: Superior Gluteal nerve
      • Gluteus Minimus: Superior Gluteal nerve
      • Tensor Fascia Latae: Superior Gluteal nerve
      • Piriformis: Nerve to Piriformis
      • Superior Gemellus: Nerve to Obturator Internus
      • ... (and many more)

    Blood Supply

    • The blood supply of the lower limb includes the common iliac artery, external iliac artery, femoral artery, popliteal artery, genicular artery, anterior tibial artery, posterior tibial artery, dorsalis pedis artery, and plantar artery.

    Venous Drainage

    • Venous drainage of the lower limb includes the common iliac vein, external iliac vein, femoral vein, popliteal vein, and other smaller veins.
